Any thoughts on that q9450? $227 seems like a fantastic deal for a 45nm quad with 12mb of cache...

I like mine. It's better than the q9400 and q8400. I didn't really push it, but it does 3.2ghz without any effort or changes besides fsb. And I'm running 8gb of cheap g.skill.

My guess is Windows 7 will benefit from quads more than previous OSs, so I'd go that route.

Generally speaking, Q6700s of a similar vintage have had better VIDs than Q6600s. Even my Q6700 with it's somewhat avg VID is a better buy than a Q6600. They are higher binned CPUs and typically OC better. For example, mine has a VID of 1.275 yet OCs to 3ghz on ~1.13v, 3.33ghz on ~1.25v, 3.7ghz on ~1.37v and up to 4.05ghz on ~1.52v(32m stable; I wasn't about to stress test :P).

Ultimately, I think you'll find most people vote along the lines of the processor they have in their possession, and not one to break trend I vote Q6700.

I prefer Quad to dual core and share the same concern(s) as you, 45nm quads are expensive and have lower multi(s) to boot!

There's a deal on Ewiz if you like to get a new mobo along with the Q6700, the promo ends today though and you have to use both links to get the free shipping.

Q6700 shipped free for $173.83
Gigabyte P45 UD3P shipped free for $129.99

Sub Total : $303.82 shipped free
- $30 with combo promo code Q6700COMBO30
- $15 with mobo MIR

$258.82 shipped free! IMHO that's a good CPU + Mobo deal.

Decided that the Q9450 is out of my price range...I need a little bit of cash in my pocket at least

I guess what this decision comes down to is how far I will likely be able to overclock the Q6700...even if my IP35-E only reaches 340FSB, I would still get 3.4G on a quad core, and if by chance my board could clock higher I would reap the benefits. Worst case scenario if I get the Q6700, I could upgrade my board down the road. I feel like buying the quad is more future proof, but I waiting on other opinions.

@ Kromm: very informative post, I'm now leaning towards the Q6700. Makes sense that they are better binned even if their VIDs may seem kind of high.

Alright, I've made up my mind. I'm going to buy that combo on Ewiz with the Q6700 + UD3P for $258 and a 4770 off newegg for $100. This brings my total cost to $358. However, I can easily break even - I am going to sell my 4890 for around $210, my P5N-E SLI for around $40, the IP35-E for around $50 (after I RMA it, of course), and my e6400 for around $50. 210+40+50+50 = $350, so I am pretty much breaking even here. Any one see anything wrong with that?
