Thumbs down Have I fried my CPU..

I bought a second hand lapped Q6600 quadcore from ebay (trusted source) for my first PC build

when i got the case, stuck the motherboard in, put in the cpu, psu, and all the rest and turned it on for a max of 20 seconds

Then i realised to my horror that I hadnt put the fking heatsink/fan on.. i touched the cpu and it was bloody hot.

I'm still waiting on a couple of parts before I can run the PC and see if its okay.. but do all of you reckon ive just wasted a processor? I'm pretty wrecked about it to be honest incase I have..

In my favour, I am running an Abit IN9-32MAX which has a feature on it that stops cpu power if it gets too hot - so maybe that saved me.. hopefully :O. Also I hear the latest processors from intel shutdown before they get irrevocably screwed through heat.

I put the heatsink on and ran the PC again after it had cooled - and the Abit has a little LCD counter on it showing codes if the POST fails - and it showed that the POST ran successfully with no errors... hopefully I'm saved.. I need to wait for the graphics card to come before I can see the full extent of my stupidity

You are probably ok, but for future reference assemble everything on the mobo outside of the case (except for video card). Then install ---You might want to do a CMOS reset just to be sure your BIOS settings are ok.

CPU shuts itself down due to overheating. You're fine but don't do it a few dozen more times.

Will do... it really freaked me out when I realised, cause I can't afford another CPU if this is cooked..

I looked at it and thought "SHIIIIIIIIIIITTTTT!"

I'm terrified cause I saw another forum where someone said "how long would a CPU last if it had no heatsink?" and the general opinion was "5 seconds"

..i wait in angst :P

Also, my motherboard has a bios reset switch, will that work whilst its off? just flick it to the on position then back to off whilst theres no power in the case?

Yes and while you have it off and unplugged -push the start button for about 15 seconds to discharge any remaining charge --then push reset

you should be fine most modern processors have like an emergancy cut off switch where if it gets to a preprogramed temp (usualy between 78-110C) it will shut down

Edit:the motherboard should have this cut off switch thing too and the temp will be considerably lower than the processor one too:Edit

lets just hope for the best eh... whilst it was running the side was off the case so it had a lot of ventilation.. but i spose that means nothing when it can only dissipate through like what.. 2cm squared centimetres surface area..

il dig up this thread when I've got my graphics card and tested it, let u know if its cremated itself!
