Plus AS5 is known for high temps at first. Long as it continues to turn on you didn't burn it... but Try to reseat CPU and heatsink, make sure you don't use too much AS5.
Note, I believe AS5 has like 200 hours burn in before it works to it's full potential. good luck

Dont feel too bad, i tried removing the cpu heat spreader and I burned my cpu to a crisp tonight.. Bad smell and everything. Dont think the heatsink sat correctly on the cpu die and it fried pretty fast. Heard it pop too.. LOL.. Hope the mainboards intact.
__________________Note to self, DONT REMOVE THE HEATSPREADER on a prescott! It was actually soldered to the die, it wasn't paste, it was solder or a very solder like metal that bonded it. Im suprised it popped off the way it did. I will post some pictures tomorrow when I get my system up again.

When you removed the old hsf it probably unseated the cpu. If that wasn't it, are you sure you removed the plastic that covers the bottom of almost all new heat sinks?

When I was getting my Sempron 2800's stock cooling off the stock err.. Took the CPU with it! I was so scared, the bar was still down and it was suppose to be locked but it pulled it out, but thank god no bent pens or anything! Just have a little bit of faith.
