Default Finally broke my computer!

Ok guys, I torched this CPU last night..

Was reading a couple posts about CPU modding and removal of the heat spreader. Well, thats not really an wise choice for the P4-E

If you look at these pics you'll notice the CPU die is actually soldered to the heat spreader. Actually I think I damaged it when it finally popped off. The adhesive on the sides was easy to cut through and even after I cut through all of that, I tested the cpu and its still worked fine, so after a little prying and wrestling with it, it went. And thats when I said, thats not thermal grease under there its freeking soft metal! Well needless to say after I used a little as5 and put the HSF back on I powered up and nothing happened. The computer just sat there with the fans and drives running but no post. Tried removing it and reseating it a few times, until I smelled that smell. You know the one, and heard a couple pops..The computer sort of dimmed out a bit almost shut down and then just kept running like it was...

I dont think the heat sink sat correctly on that small square die, like it does with the larger square heat spreader or i actually damaged the cpu when i pryed the spreader off...I dont know for sure. All I know is that the way this is mounted is most likely a better solution then applying your hsf directly to the die. I think it needs this soldered connection to transfer the heat to the spreader more effectively. Maybe if you soldered the die directly to your HSF it would work, but other then that I dont think so.

Well, good point. Unfortunately I just bought a new agp graphics card for this rig and really didnt feel like removing the mobo again. So I just broke down and bought the highest cpu I could for this board... My next real upgrade will have to be pci-express, ddr2, and so on...And that would have been costly.

Probably should have gotten an AMD agp board cpu/combo or something, but I didn't

Alot of heatsinks can't reach down far enogh to touch the die in a socket 478 hs bracket.

Yah, prescott ihs removal isn't recomended.. Tomshardware split the die straight in 2 by trying it.

Btw, dude do some experiments and find the melting point of that metal.

No it sat on the die, I could tell that it was contacting because the as5 was all flattened out.

Just playing with this solder like substance, It's not quite solder, but damn close. Its a bit softer, but its still very high in metal content and was hot and liquidy when it was manufactured...Hell, I wouldnt doubt if this stuff turned to liquid every time you ran the pc.

And yeah, I got owned... Please stop me from opening this case again.

Dont mean to double post but, I dont really have the equipment to test for that sort of thing. I would mail someone the heat spreader, it still has the stuff on it. The cpu die was scraped clean.. Who can test for that?
