Alright so I've had my Q6600 for about three months now and it had been overclocked to 1333 (2.4ghz --> 3.0ghz) since I bought it. I used a tuniq tower fan to help cool my cpu. Anyway, up until recently my computer had been crashing on me like every few hours. I reverted my clock speed to 2.4ghz stock speed, and now my computer only crashes once every two days. However, I think my CPU is permanently damaged as now whenever I my cpu processes something (streaming live cut scene in game, game camera scrolling around maps), the sequences are really choppy, which didn't happen before. There's also my computer crashing occasionally. I want to claim a warranty but how do I prove that the CPU is faulty? What can I tell them when I call them up? I obviously can't tell them that I had been using a 3rd party fan and that I had it overclocked.

don't tell them you overclocked it/changed the cooler, just ship it with the stock cooler
you shouldn't need to explain anything else other than what you just said in the RMA request form

I would start off formatting Windows before jumping to conclusions like that.

this is why you run tests when you OC, and you can tell them that you ran certain tests and were receiving errors as to the diagnose of the CPU, good luck

I'm really doubtful that it's your CPU, since you literally never hear about factory defects.
It's more likely your RAM, GPU, or motherboard, or it could just be a PEBKAC error while inside the BIOS.

your cpu is not faulty. Try running memtest86+

Like I'm practically sure it's the CPU because the CPU's the only thing that I've been ****ing around with (OC). I don't have any artifacts with GPU. Like when I first got my cpu to 3.0 it almost never crashed and then the frequency of crashes increased over time and now when I try to OC back to 3.0, it almost immediately crashes (few minutes). However, now it only crashes once every two days or so now that it's back at clock speed. I may have installed the cooler or applied the thermal gel improperly. It's possible my ram may be faulty though. How do I test the ram?
My main concern is choppiness. Everything's choppy including videos streaming on Youtube to video game camera panning, to menu screen animations. |
