Hey everyone. Like the title states, I am a person who is new to the concept of overclocking and was wondering for feedback on how to proceed. I just finished assembling my system build and i filled out the system info. My stock speed is 2.66 GHz and I want to get it to 4.00 GHz. Let me know of any extra info needed to give you guys a better picture of what i have to do. Thanks for your input.

Fundamentally you need to increase the fsb speed. At some point you will experience instability, this means you need to add more voltage. Add a little voltage, then add fsb, repeat until satisfied.

Welcome to the forum and get ready to work hard!! Overclocking takes a lot of work (to get the most out of your chip and do it right). Make sure to read these guides (you'll need to do a lot of reading if you plan on doing it well
):http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...l-threads.html Also, feel free to find people with similar configurations to yours and ask them for advice. Good luck!!

Disable Turbo, Hyperthreading, and C1E.
Set QPI, uncore, and memory to the lowest settings. Now you can isolate your OC to your CPU. Keep raising the Bclock until it wont boot into your OS anymore After that , you can play around with the RAM and make it go faster, use memtest86 to test it for stability. Thats the simple version, do some searching, there's lots of i7 OC info around here

Hey everyone. I'm currently at 3.6 Ghz and I'm trying to reach 4 Ghz, but there something that's not letting me boot when running a system memory multiplier of 8X that would still make the memory frequency 1440mhz and just under 1600 mhz.
__________________I am currently running my system at a system memory multiplier of 6X running with a 1080 memory frequency and the DRAM voltage at 1.64 V. if u change the ram multiplier anymore that 6X, it will not boot. So all in all, currently I have a [20] Multiplier for CPU Clock Ratio X [180] BCLK= 3.6 GHz System Memory Multiplier 6X Memory Frequency 1080 Mhz QPI Link Speed x36 CPU VCORE = 1.2500V QPI/Vtt Voltage= 1.195V IOH CORE= 1.120V DRAM Voltage= 1.640V 8-8-8-21 These are the recommended timings for the ram Can anybody recommend me settings that will allow me to get to the 4Ghz speed?

Have you tried putting the memory at 1.66? I've heard of some sticks not being able to do speeds even less than what it's rated for unless 1.66 is set.

raising vdimm high than 1.65 should be fine as long as you keep it within .5 of vtt if I recall. Loosening the timings a little but can also help if necessary. I usually loosen my ram timings when I first overclock and then get them stable at manuf. clocks afterwards.
fyi, I wouldn't disable HT unless you are just using it for gaming. Whole reason I got my 920 was for the extra threads for rendering.

I was in your shoes about 2 weeks ago (new to OCing that is), so I certainly do not consider myself an expert. But your QPI/VTT seems low even for a D0. What is your uncore multiplier? It should be at least 2x your memory (so 12x if you are using 6x), but people seem to recommend 2x+1 for Gigabyte boards (so 13x). I was having issues getting to 4.0+ with my UD3R and things got better when I moved to 2x+1. I also had better luck using 21x191 to get over 4.0 (an odd multiplier instead of 20). I also used an odd multiplier for my 3.8 clock as well. I am still refining my 4.0 OC, but I am using about 1.3 vcore and 1.2ish QPI/VTT for my C0. I started from a high VCORE/QPI combo and worked down on my VCORE until I could not run LinX (all memory) for 10 minutes and then moved up til it was stables at 25 runs. I am now working the QPI down.
__________________Good luck! As a reference, my 3.8 OC (which is 19x200, with 1.19 vcore and 1.24 qpi/vtt) gives my max temps over 25 LinX runs with max memory of 62C. My current 4.0 OC gives me max temps over 25 LinX runs with max memory of 72C. This is in my basement so ambient temps are low 20s C.

RileyRR, How do you get 21x Multiplier on the 920?
I thought 20x was the highest you could go unless turbo is enabled and then that automatically does 21x under load.
