Default 3.2 ES (14x16 multi) or P4 3.4 EE socket 478

Want to upgrade my proc and have found these two processors the 3.2E Engineering Sample with 14x16 multipier (Presscot) and a 3.4 Gallatin

the 3.2 i can get for 130 euro's and the 3.4 for 195 euro...pretty good prices i think but this is China so bit cheaper

My board is a 865PE ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe, have 2x1 gig of DDR400 only 220 FSB OC with these sticks...I'm using a Zalman 7000CU, OCZ Modstream 520W

I'm not a huge gamer but do play some games when i have nothing better to do but mostly i'm just a freak that wants to make his computer as good as possible but doing it slowly...and kind of future proof i guess...maxin out its computer life

Of course i want to OC it...

The 3.4 has 2M L3 Cache...not really sure what it does for me but sounds good....but is it worth the extra money or is that engineering sample with unlucked multiplier really interesting....

Anyway i know its up to me but would like to know what other people think

L3 is another layer of cache like L1 and L2 its very good to have those when gaming cuz it will increase some power. The EE edition will give out a lot of heat and will barely be able to overclock which the ES edition has unlocked multi which will give plenty of overclocking capabilites. Personally if I weren't a gamer I would choose the ES edition becuase it will be able to go probably 4 ghz with good cooling while the 3.4EE is harder to oc becuase it releases much more heat which creates heat problems.

Engineer Samples do have unlocked multi's, but there is no guarantee they're stable at other frequencies. Buying an ES is a bit risky. If you're just a gamer, you don't need to oc that 3.4EE. Go with the Gally

True ES is a risk you have to take. They can be good or bad

Do not get the EE Galatin, there would be no point spending the extra on a processor that does not improve performance by a huge amount

The Engineering sample would be a much better choice, you are able to select either the 14x or x16 multipliers so you can either have a high bus speed or a high clock speed.

I would have to recommend a different processor than either of these 2 though, just get a normal 3.2GHz Prescott, it would be cheaper and quite efficient and it would also overclock a lot. However you are limited to a x16 multiplier only. The Prescott core does have 1MB L2 cache as well as 16+12KB L1 cache so the cache should not be a huge problem. The 3.2GHz Prescott would also have SSE3 and HT so it should be quite fast as multi-tasking and calculations. 800FSB is built in as standard and that should be able to get to at least 4GHz (1000FSB) if the other components are up to the challenge

If however you have to choose between these two then I would have to say get the ES as it has a x16 multiplier that will get you to a good clock speed but also you can choose your x14 multitplier for a amazing bus speed. Plus it does not have the temperature issues that the EE has. The EE however has a higher rated maximum thermal specification to compensate for the excess heat generated.

L3 cache is good but its not super important. L3 cache is the slowest cache on a processor that Intel make for the desktop, there is a lot but having more L2 would be better, like the 6xx series that have 2048KB L2 cache

EE's in general are not worth the additional cost, but at that price, I would jump on it. The ES would be fun, but like BIOHazard87 said, the 3.4 will be the better investment. The additional cache alone (remember, we're talking s478 here) is worth the additional cost. My $.02.
