They should've used the same Quad core and disabled the cores, imo.

The differences between the two processors looks negligible in many cases. So especially if you're working on a cheap budget build, getting a dual core instead of a quad is not going to kill you right now. Quad cores don't scale well.

I still wouldn't say Quads are for gaming. Most of those Benchmarks prove that you should just settle for a Dual Core and spend the money on GPU power. I doubt I hardly use my Q6600 to its fullest potential tbh.

Get the quad if you plan to keep it for a while. With high fsb board such as UD3R/P, quad can be Oced higher.

Dual core is one of the first stages of dual CPU tech. Core 2 duo is the second full revision of the technology. Intel defines the specs, features, cache, speed, and fsb on these chips differently. Older series of processor as well. However, they still make dual core CPU's, like the E5200, or the new E6300. Plus they are usually 65nm technology, not 45 like the core 2 duo.

basically the same CPU's, but the dual-core versions are lacking in cache, and a few features. A stripped down Core 2 Duo if you would say.

Not really. Dual core just means the CPU has two cores. Core 2 Duo is one series of dual core processors, just like the Athlon X2 series.
