Default Voltage question for i7 920 D0

Hello (first time poster, be gentle )

First I will post the specifics of the system I am about to ask a question on

Motherboard: ASUS P6T Deluxe V2
CPU: Intel i7 Core 920 (D0 stepping)
RAM: 6Gb (3x2Gb) Corsair Dominator 1600 (TR3X6G1600C8D)

I bought the 920 because it seemed like it could easily be overclocked to 3,2 on air and not take real damage over time or loose durability (I am a OC n00b but it seemed that the less voltage needed to OC it would help on its lifespan), or even get to hot.

I bought the RAM because unlike the OCZ Blade 2000 that I wanted they didnt cost a farm to buy - they are certified to be able to run at 1600Mhz if you want at 8-8-8-24 1T (think its 1T).

Now for the overclocking I did

At first I did the XMS OC option, which did get me the 1600Mhz on the RAM, but left the CPU behind - so went to Manual and set the FSB to 160Mhz

This gave me 3.2Ghz on the CPU, and the RAM ended up at 1604Mhz I think - had to manually set the timings to 8-8-8-24 1T

(Have the speed stepping etc on the CPU turned off)

The question:
Now the voltage I dared not mess with so left it at auto, before the OC I read it at around 0.9, and now it is at 1.24

I have seen OC's up to 3.8Ghz and 3.9Ghz using around 1.3 volt so think my 1.24 is a little high, also I read that auto might set it too high - what should the voltage be for me?

(CPU gets around 50 degrees celcius ATM idle, and 69 under load from Prime)

Also I have the QPI thingy set to auto instead of 4.(something) or 5.(something) or 6.4Giga(something) - should I mess with any other settings in my BIOS?

Thanks for the replies that may come :-D

My 920 C0/C1 is running @ 4GHz with 1.35V and around 1.25V @ 3.5GHz. So I'd say lower the voltages to 1.2V and run Prime. If there are no hick-ups, lower the voltages couple of notches and repeat. It also looks like you haven't upgraded your mobo BIOS. If you do that, you can unlock the 21x multiplier and run lower FSB and perhaps voltages to achieve 3.2GHz.

I would love to see proof of this i will give Rep if you show me a c0 running a 4 w/1.35vcore stable.

Lowered it to 1.20 and got a mild crash, so just left it at auto and 1.24 - would not make my CPU take damage right?

Failed overclocks due to insufficient voltage never harm processors.

The i7 920 is a tank. You could run that thing up to around 1.4V for a relatively short period of time and it would be fine. Try 1.3V and take it up to 4.0GHz. You got a D0 stepping, so it should be cake.

What cooler are you using?

Welcome to the forums Do you have llc enabled (If not do so)? I know you said eist is disabled but what about c1e? Change your memory multiplier to 8 and work your way up on the bclk. Also what qpi? And make sure your uncore is 2x your memory. You shouldnt need more than 1.25v to hit 4ghz on a d0.

WHOA Chadamir, IIc? c1e?

I havent messed with the QPI - been reading it should have same vcore as the CPU, is this right?

I am now thinking that I might not have applied the thermal paster very well (actually first time I do that lol), coz I get 70 degrees @ 3.2 GHz with air.

The cooler I am using is the ASUS Triton 88 - with just 1 fan.

I have been reading that lowering the multiplier and raising the BLCK would generate less heat, is this so? and what are the upsides/downsides to doin it that way?

Also the mild crash I had was not a crash, was lack of updated BIOS :-D (S3 state problem with P6T)

I am beginning to think I could even lower the vcore on the CPU to something like 1.10 instead of 1.20 - gonna try and then move my way up
