For the price you would pay for watercooling, no. Personally i think of everything in terms of FPS/$$$. Watercooling (traditional anyway) just doesn't fit the bill - you would be better served getting another 4870X2 or a better CPU/MB.

LOL at all the misinformation in this thread and people saying you will see some significant increases in FPS with games

I suggest you have a look at this review to see the increase in FPS with a Q9550S at 2.83 Ghz, 3.4 GHz and 4 GHz.

http://alienbabeltech.com/main/?p=2852

Eg.

Far Cry 2 at 1920x1200

2.83 GHz - 46.18 FPS
4.0 GHz - 46.25 FPS

Point is, even if you get a 1-2 FPS gain, is it worth spending all that money ?

Yes, i think it is because like most of the people here, I love trying to squeeze every ounce of performance out of my components and fiddling with voltages, bus speeds and cooling setups to get the maximum for the money I spent. I get more joy out of building a system and tinkering with it than I get from playing computer games and making movies. Thanks everyone for all the input, if anyone could comment on my post about my RAM modules not being able to go any higher that would be awsome

Then you go for it, i know the joy of that. But if you were only doing it to get significant extra performance as the thread title suggested, then it would not be worth it.

If you think watercooling is worth the money for looks or whatever then that's ok, I'm just saying you aren't going to see much of a performance boost.

It really depends on the game and setup, etc. Some games are much more CPU dependant, and will get quite an increase from an overclock. Other games (i.e. FC2), just don't care about CPU after a certain point.

Also, multi-GPU configs are much more CPU dependant, so you'd probably see more of an increase if you were using quad-SLI and decided to run benchies at a higher clock.

Now that sounds right.

Again a benchy to prove the above claim

Quad Core vs Dual Core: Q9550S vs. E8600, Part III - CPU Scaling with CrossFire

Nice gains in Far Cry 2, COJ and Crysis with Crossfire and Tri-Fire with Q9550S at 2.83 GHz and at 4.0 GHz.
