Default Prime95 test @ 3.2Ghz

FSB 400
8x Multi
3.2Ghz

Prime95 Small FFT test for 59mins.

Passed all tests, average & highest temp was 70/71c.
Stopped at: Self-test 12K passed!
Torture test ran 59 minutes - 0 errors, 0 warnings.

Core Temp reading Idle @ 37c

Now for gaming use, how high would I expect the CPU Temperature to rise?
Also, for 3d programs. In other words, how much buffer temp. should I have?
i.e. 60c would give me roughly 14c to play with.

Also, I have ordered "Arctic Cooling AC-FRZ-7P Freezer 7 Pro" with "Arctic Cooling Mx-2 Thermal Compound"
Should get them delivered on sat.

What is the highest OC from the owners of E7400 ever clocked stable?
(I did a quick search on g00gle and found that most were able to clock to 3.6Ghz with 4ghz aim)

To consider an OC stable, Prime95 Small FFTs should pass at least 8 hours (some will say 12, some will say 24 hours). An OC can appear to be stable and then fail Prime95 after a couple hours.

Gaming, folding, rendering, etc. will not get heat your chip as much as a stress test. Don't worry if your chip gets a little hotter than Intel's thermal spec while Priming because it won't get that hot during normal use...

Thanks MCBrown.CA
I'll take that into consideration and follow through.

Is there a program that shutsdown the Prime95 test if the temperature goes above a certain temp?
I can't imagine sitting in front of the monitor for hours without taking my eyes off my "Core Temp" program.

Generally if you have a good temp after about 15 minutes your fine for several hours, The reason I had you test for an initial hour is for a baseline. Generally if your PC is very unstable it will BSOD or round error within the first 30 minutes of a small fft's test however, an hour isn't enough to ensure total stability, just enough to get a round about idea as whether your CPU voltage is sufficient, or close to sufficient for extended testing, and whether or not your temps will good or bad for that period of testing. Small FFT's focus mainly on CPU stability as they fill the cache with data and no memory is tested or brought into the equation, Large FFT's has a combination between memory testing and CPU testing, and blend is just that a blend of all the tests. I have passed many hours of small fft's only to fail a blend test due to a lack of NB voltage, or unstable ram. So it is important after you get your initial testing out of the way and find were you want to be that you test for several hours I would suggest 4 hours small fft's, 4 hours blend minimum, the best is a 24 hour run to ensure stability however, stability is in the eye of the beholder.

Im curious, did you use the thermal pad that came on your stock cpu cooler, or did you put on a different thermal interface material? If you were to put on a different TIM you may be able to shed a few degrees with the stock cooler, if you are utilizing the stock thermal pad that comes on the cooler. If you do not have TIM to replace the pad with, just sit tight and wait for your new cooler to come.

As far as the Arctic cooling 7 goes, its not the best cooler, but it will perform better than your stock one will and will allow you to clock higher at better temps. Generally most chips Intel core 2 chips are able to do around 800mhz-1ghz overclock if properly cooled and given enough voltage to do so. Some chips take more voltage than other, some less to achieve similar clocks. You have had your chip to 3.4ghz on the stock cooler, with high temps no less, but 3.4 regardless. I don't foresee 3.6-4.0 too far from your reach.

Absolutely everything on this rig is stock. Including the TIM (thanks for the new acronym).

I tried to find the suggested cooler as mentioned previously but couldn't find a vendor that had it. So after reading several reviews on the used vendors website. I settled for the Arctic Cooling unit. I guess, the price reflects the performance (it was very cheap). Reading your thoughts on the cooler unit.

Which coolers would you recommend for price/performance ratio? Best bang for the buck/pound so to speak. No pun intended.

In terms of best bang for your buck, I think most would agree on the Xigmatek Dark Night:

I did 3.4 before I got my cooler but I already had some OCZ Freeze TIM...try it.

Windows is reading your default settings, so, the sum is wrong--it's nothing. When I first started I saw 4.46 GHz and was like "holy #$@!" just go by cpu-z....

How's the oc going?

The Dark Knight is the best bang for the buck cooler as previously stated, its essentially the same thing as the Xigmatek S283 except it comes with a backplate for mounting the cooler as well as a better fan in terms of air flow. The Xigmatek S1283 is a bit cheaper but doesnt come with a backplate, but between those two they are most known for being the best performance per dollar or pound. Previously the DK was a bit more expensive than the S1283 but currently on NewEgg its the same price, strange. Either way youll be fine with the Arctic Cooling 7 pro.

Yes, I have just ordered a Xigmatech myself with a retention bracket. I'll tell you how it goes

Also your speed looks high because Windows still assumes your multiplier is 10.5 not 8.5.

Sorry you weren't stable at the settings I gave you. My e7200 was a tad cooler
