Well if you lap your CPU your warranty is void anyway and you can not return it. Like everyone else said OC first then lap it.

Thanks, I'll do that

WHile we're at lapping... how about sanding off the IHS completely? Does it make sense? How risky is it?

Extremely risky... that and I think someone tried that on the forum, and it just stopped working. Didn't damage anything, just stopped working. Someone else I believe did it thought which is where the pic you have might have been from

Ausome idea in concept but lapping just the HSF its self is risky. Sanding down to the die'ode is asking for troubble. Plus anycooler you put on it will require a special mod to sit evenly with the die'ode and you cant use normal thermal paste on it then.

Why not? My old AthlonXP CPU's had direct-die cooling too. No fancy IHS's back then.

Id be scared of some of the paste touching those transistors at the top of the chip!

When the IHS is completely removed, there is still a difference in the height of the die and the remaining outside height. This means that there is now no contact between the die and the heatsink, where as before the IHS served to dissipate the heat to the heatsink.

Looks fantastic out of case, but when it's under a heatsink, can you see it anyway? Get a good lap job (), and then get us some temps!

Well the possibility exists to completely remove the IHS, including the outside frame: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=222040 (Courtesy of corross from XS)

And then just add foam/rubber washers at the edges, just like the AthlonXP had...
