Hi guys,
I was wondering what CPU was the most powerful PER CORE. For instance, 1 Wolfdale core would beat 1 Conroe core, get what I mean? I know that Quad-Core are good for multi-tasking, but can 1 Yorkfield beat 1 Wolfdale core? Thanks.

depends on the speed and cache of that perticular core.

the Yorkfield´s are basically 2 wolfdale Die´s!
the fastest cpu per core from Core 2 series is the E8600 and if Intel ever release the E8700! overall the fastest per core is the i7 975 XE!

Most of cores are nearly identical.... it's relatively easy to compare.

I think they are exactly the same thing, unless one of the core is extremely outdated. What determines the higher clock is how many transistors the CPU board have. But don't quote me on this.

A Bloomfield core is currently the fastest out there right now clock-for-clock if I'm not mistaken.

Across a generation each core is essentially the same.
1x 45nm yorkfield w/4mb L2 @ 3.0 ghz should equal 1x 45nm Wolfdale w/ 4mb L2 @ 3.0 ghz. If you are looking for the highest performance per core, then the Nehalem would be the top dog.

Get the E8400-E8500-E8600 or the quad cores Q9x50. The Q9650 is the best LGA775 quad core chip as far as I know.

The transistor count just tells you... how many transistors make up a CPU. Generally, the higher the count, the more complex the CPU... and hence "better".
