The Q6600 would be better because the Xeon is designed more for servers while the Q6600 is like the rest of the Core2 CPUs and is designed more for enthusiasts like us.

I thought these two chips were the same and that the Xeons are just higher binned chips? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I would disagree, the recent/latest Q6600 SLACRs that came out have very high vids (1.325v)... unfortunately I bought mine during Nov 2008, batch L8XXX.. turns out my vid is 1.325 and I'm really having a hard time going past 3.2GHz.
__________________If you're buying a brand new CPU, better stick to an Intel Xeon X3220.. but if you're looking for 2nd hand I think a Q6600 would be a better choice, just look for one with a low vid.

They are identical, no differences except revision. The only difference between the Q6600 and Xeon is probably how Intel tests them.

Well id say the xeon. Since they are server chips, they are higher binned and from the middle of the waffer, which are well kinda like "Golden" chips, if you may. They should have a higher thermal limit and overclock a little better. Thats why the old 939 opterons were all the rave a few years ago.

Lol. Try getting a 2nd hand chip that is a known overclocker. Use the buy/sell section of this forum. There are a few ppl selling their q6600/6700's.
