Hello everyone at ocn, I recently tried to oc my Q6600 to 3.0, but I'm worried about my temperatures because they seem high. I set my Vcore in bios to 1.35 and cpuz displays it as 1.282 under load. While running prime95, at 100% load, core temp at 100c tjmax gives my temperatures of 74c,72c,69c,68c with my ambient being around 22c. I was wondering if this is normal or do I need to invest in a new cooler. Are these temperatures safe for a 24/7 oc?

Those temperatures are a tad bit high. Does your Xigmatek HDT-S1283 setup have the crossbow kit (retention bracket) holding it in place?

No, I do not believe it came with a bracket. Is that the difference between the s1283 and rs1283?

1) use a retention bracket (I know there are version of the 1283 that don't have a bracket- i guess u have just push pins ) You can buy the bracket for cheap and it helps make a more secure contact between your cpu and heatsink by putting more pressure via the bracket(which u dont have) 2) You can buy a new heatsink like a TRUE or Prolimatech Megahalem. These 2 heatsink coolers are really design to perform with quad core cpu's at really high overclocks. I would recommend these 2 coolers if you have the budget and want to make sure your quadcore has the best air cooling.

Theres a thread regarding the differences between the s1283 and the rs1283 here: http://www.overclock.net/air-cooling...hdt-s1283.html
Seriously consider buying the retention bracket. You will see your temps drop between 5-10 degrees per core. It did so for mine. Its silly that the HDT-S1283's do not have them included as the cooler doesnt ever function properly without them.

I can't believe nobody said this...
The TJMax for the Q6600 is 90C, not 100C. Therefore your temps were really 64c,62c,59c,58c respectively. Those temperatures are fine for a Q6600. You should only be worried if temps run 72C+. With Coretemp, set your TJ. Max to -10 offset.

Thank you everyone for the quick response. I guess I have to spend some money =(. If i invested in a new heatsink, would it make a big difference compared to the one I currently have?

if u do have the money ; then buy the best air cooling heatsinks that i've just listed. Some heatsinks come with multiple sockets like 775/ 1156 and 1156 so that when you do change/upgrade your rig you can still keep using that expensive heatsink.
