If hes on a budget I'd see no reason to get i7 over i5.

On overclockers.co.uk http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=GX-143-XF http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=MY-172-CS http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=CP-249-AM http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=MB-201-GI Then you could unlock the extra 2 cores on the processor. Not sure if thats a right motherboard able to unlock them though. You would also have enough money left to get a decent cooler and overclock it a good bit.

They are probably roughly the same. Unless you plan on going SLI/Crossfire the AM3 will pull ahead.

Well the i5 will be quite a bit faster than the 68 pound am3 processor for encoding. For gaming I wouldnt bother with an i5 or i7 rig. Get the processor I linked you to and do some searching on google to see if the motherboard will unlock the extra 2 cores on it ( then you will have a phenom II x4 instead of x2 ).

I think an i7 system could be done if you are willing to buy used parts. On the For Sale section of this forum you could pick up an i7 920 for around £160, a Gigabyte UD3R for £120ish and that leaves you a fair amount for RAM. The only down side is that you have to have used components and you have to wait and hope for these components to come up for sale
...Worth considering though!

wouldn't unlocking cores cause my system to go unstable?

Dont know much about amd processors but from the reviews on overclockers.co.uk, people have overclocked that processor to 3.7ghz or over with all 4 cores unlocked.
