I will be playing every new game, that came out/will come out (e.g. Red Faction Guerilla, Resident Evil 5, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2, COD4MW2, Crysis(will finish in 2 days or so, runs ok on my current system) And also, will my 500W Thermaltake handle my new rig?

For gaming the i5 and e8400 are quite close clock for clock. With the system posted above you wouldn't get much overclocking on stock cooling. If you got an e8400 you could get it to 4ghz easily and it would beat the i5 ( or any processor in that case ) is almost every game.
__________________The phenom x2 550 will lag behind a bit. It is quite a bit cheaper though and is still a very good cpu for gaming. I'd get an e8400/p45 motherboard and you would still have 100 pounds or more to get a high end cooler. Whats the full model number on your psu? CF/SLI will be of no use to you on a 17". However p45 supports crossfire. If you wanted SLI you would have to get with a nvidia chipset motherboard.

go i5.
its faster clock for clock than the AMD and unless you plan to use multi-GPU it should be OK.

E8400 is my recommendation... I'd say its a very good option and overclocks past 4 GHz usually.

would there be much difference if i get e8400 rather than quad core in games? I want this setup to last for ~1.5-2 years
