Exclamation Huge temperature change with new thermal paste! Questions!

I am running an i7 920, d0.

I have overclocked it to ~3.8 by setting the cpu voltage at 1.3 or 1.275 the BCLK at 180 and the multi at 20. HT = off and all default power savers are on.

It was running great until the day before yesterday, when I took the 920 out of my DX58SO board, and tried a Xeon x5570 (which turned on, but would not show video in either one of my DX58SO's - idk why).

After trying the xeon, I replaced the 920.

The thermal paste (original from stock cooler) was caked and crusty after only 2 months of use. I left it on there.

I figured it'd be fine to run the machine for a few hours and buy some thermal paste tomorrow. I started it up, checked the temps, and they were average at 65.

Before removing the cpu temps had been at ~55, and max 82 at 99 percent load with prime95. Now that the thermal compound had crusted and halfway disappeared, temps were ~10 degrees hotter. I figured as soon as I replaced the thermal paste, the temps would go back to where they had been.

I bought some antec silver, cleaned and buffed the surface of the cpu and the contact of the heat sink, applied less than half a pea worth, and installed the cooler (stock).

Temps are still avg 65. I tried to test load with prime again, and temps went through the roof. I almost had to check that I had even put the cooler on!

Temp at load shot up to 90C, made a warning, and by that time I was already holding the power button on the front of my case.

What the heck could I have done that resulted in this temperature increase?

It's night time and not hot. I double checked that hyperthreading is off.

Thanks for your help. Solve my problem, and maybe I'll paypal you a few bux.

check the mounting of your block...... doublecheck. it has to be it. also, re-do the application of the AS-5..... MAKE SURE its applied evenly, not missing any of the chip....

Artic Silver needs time to cure but I don't think it will make up for the 10 degree difference. Hmm......

EDIT: I would also agree with the above post, the stock push pins are no fun. Make sure its getting good contact

I'm at 73C right now, just doing daily stuff. I will remount the cooler and reapply the paste. I'll post here the results. I def did check that it is secure though.

What is your experience with the thermal paste that comes on the stock coolers? Is it effective because it is perfectly applied, or does it not even come close to the leading silver compound?

at what temperature should I be worried about damage? 85C? what temperature is normal for a 3.8 overclock with 920? are the temperature readings from realtemp correct? is some kind of calibration necessary, or are the thermometers pretty exact?

Thanks!

Thermal spec on a i7 920 is like 74C i think.... I would want to keep it under 80 no matter what. I would recommend using coretemp for your readings... and compare the numbers to a program of your choice to find yourself a range.. clean off your heatsink and processor top with rubbing or denatured alcohol....

apply like as much as a grain of rice or a grain and a half just to make sure it spreads more towards the edges... but also consider that too much of a layer and you almost start insulating the processor...

test fit the heatsink and then latch it down... and make sure the fans plugged in :P

Let us know....

I would expect red hot temps when you fit it with old crap paste from the last usage... I've never used antec silver... but try getting some noctua or as5 paste...

Also: ever consider an aftermarket heatsink ?

I removed the heatsink, removed the cpu, cleaned the surfaces, applied half a pea of antec silver, and put everything back. Still temps when doing daily stuff are at ~65 and when I try to run prime95 i have to shut everything down before it damages my equipment because it def is going above 80.

I do not know what to do. I just ordered some AS5 and I would get an aftermarket heatsink, but everything was working fine before, with the stock cooler and the cpu goop that came on it (~55 at normal use, 83 max at full load).

Exclamation wooo

well, I heated it up, shut it off. heated it up, shut it off. and now it doesnt make an alarm when I run the prime95 test from realtemp. 86 85 84 84 were my max temps at 98% load.

Is that ok? Is that waay too high? Do you think I will damage my cpu if I don't get an aftermarket cooler?

Thanks for all your help,

Spencer

Check if a push pin came out.
(What did you use on the HSF?)

What is HSF? Heat sink fan? Heat sink face?

I checked the push pins.

I m running about 10 progz - temps are ~74 now, where they used to be ~60

Has anyone had good results with the goop that came on the stock cooler?
