Question
__________________Many guides I read online say to use a 21x CPU Multiplier and a 8x RAM multiplier. I am trying to get my i7 to 4ghz from 3.8ghz but with these multipliers I'm getting either ram that's below 1600 mhz or a CPU that's above 4ghz. Am I doing something wrong here? Seems I can only get 4ghz and 1600mhz ram using a 20x CPU multi. Current settings I have in my template: CPU MHZ desired 4,000.0 Multiplier needed 20.0x Base Clock input 200.0 RAM Multiplier 8.0x Effect RAM Speed 1,600.0 Implied uncore @ 2x RAM 16.0x QPI to Maintani 9:8 ratio 18.0x Thanks in advance.

check out the guide in my sig. it is the best one i have found.
as for having the CPU above 4ghz, what is wrong with that? :-P

Hey, thanks for the reply.
__________________Reason I want it to be at 4ghz is because of temps. I have a CM V8 so it is not the best air cooler out there. Yes, that's one of the main guides I've been focusing on. Suggesting to use a 21x multiplier. 21x ~190 BLCK gets me to right above 4ghz but then my ram is at 1500-1550 which is lower then what it's rated at, should I be concerned? Sorry if these are noob questions I haven't OC'd since P3 days

there is nothing wrong with having the memory below the rated speed. :-)
that just allows you to tighten the timings more which i have found gives better performance anyway. ;-)

hey, i posted here so other people could see the response in the future so they do not have to create similar threads ;-)
I am not a fan of the get-it-stable-then-lower-your-voltages method. I always start with stock voltages and raise my baseclock untill i am no longer stable. then you look at what error you are getting and raise whatever voltage applies. always have your dimm voltage at 1.65, but other than that just work your way up from stock. ;-) as to the multiplier, it varies from chip to chip. many chips seem to be less stable with the 20x multiplier because of how the memory and QPI ratios work, but some are the opposite and like the 20x multi. better. try both and see what you get, but typicaly either 19 or 21 are best. also, make sure to write down all the changes you make so you can easily remember what you have done and tried. there is alot of trial and error with the I7's. if you really want to do it right and have the time for it then the best way to do things is to first lower your cpu multiplier as low as it will go and set your vcore to stock. that will alow you to raise your base clock without having to worry about vcore so you can figure out what voltages your setup needs for different baseclocks. if you keep pushing and write down your voltages required for different baseclocks in increments of 5-10 you can then go back and raise your multiplier back up high and just push your core as far as it will go only having to worry about vcore because you already know the voltages for everything else. ;-) Quote:

I say just stay with the 21x and raise your FSB till you're content with your memory. I don't think your V8 should have a problem with frequencies north of 4GHz, my NV-120 is wayyy below the max safe temp at 4.2 GHz

Do you guys just leave ICH and IOH volts alone? I don't see any real mention of them in the guide.

leave them at stock unless you need to raise them. I do not ever leave anything on auto though because the bios will automaticly raise them if they are on auto. just set them to whatever your bios sets them to on auto at stock speeds.

Isn't leaving your voltages on Auto a no-no? Because the BIOS will just keep raising them till it gets what it wants, or a dead CPU
