You don't need an expensive mobo either.
For example, P55-UD2/UD3R or the Asus P755D don't cost a lot & you'll still be able to do 4+ GHz on them.

Unless you really want SLi/CF or want to do very heavy OCing, there's no real need for X58.

If you want to spend more money, then go i7 920 obviously.

I am looking at your rig and you have the i5 running at 4ghz. Pretty easy to do on air?

i think the i7s and i5s were pretty much designed to reach 4ghz only very few people can get 4.5ghz or higher its all about luck when skills are equily matched!

ive heard the i5 motherboards have problems like graphic cards bottle necking in sli so i went for i7, also because the 1366 motherboards can hold the i9 cpus when they come out.

But the i5-870 beats the c**p outta the Core i7 920 in performance and costs more.

I agree that the P55 boards that are just about to be released (within the week or so) have USB 3.0 and SATA 3 (6Gbps) featured on them.
P55 Chipset + Windows Seven = iPhone/iPod Touch synching fail. Read up; that's why I went x58

Plus, $30 for a PCI-e card to handle USB 3.0.... available right this very minute.

Also, no drives can even come close to needing SATA 6 Gbps atm; go with a PCI based SSD if you need speed that bad :/

The i7 overall is due to higher memory bandwidth, but i5 offers better value for money as far as benches go.

As long as you get a decent mobo (again, doesn't need to cost alot as long as you steer clear of the AsRock/ECS/other questionable ones) & good cooler, i'd say 4 GHz is doable for most i5 750s.

DO note that while i'm no guru, i am pretty good with OCing, so obviously if you aren't OC-savvy, you might want to set expectations a bit lower.

Couldn't you saturate that with an array of SSD?

Even in Canada, an i7 can be had for about $300. An i5 costs $230. A motherboard for either costs about $150-$200.

In short for about the $80 (after tax is factored in) price difference you might as well go i7.

(By contrast, AMD's budget quad core, the Athlon II X4, is $120ish Canadian. Couple that with a decent mobo and you're rockin' and rolling while you wait for the new Phenom steppings to come out.)
i7 920 is $90 more than the i5 750.
Decent X58 boards start at over $200, good P55s are nearly $150.
4GB of ram is about $90, 6GB is $140

So i7 is $190 more expensive than i5 at least.

$190 is a lot of money. I would rather go i5 + 4890CF than i7 + 1x4890.

What exactly do you mean with the comments about the PCI-e card and the SATA drive?

its been said you can run the i7 920 in dual chan. so the ram isn't a issue.

Yeah this board I got for $170 is crap. It will only run my i7 at 4.2ghz on air 24/7.
