you mean if you do not reinstall windows after your updates. i would do a clean install with almost any upgrade. no problem that way.

When I moved from a dual to a quad recently I just reinstalled windows. It sucks, but it ensures that there will be less issues.

can't say i've heard of that issue...

i swapped an E2160 with a Q6600 and had no issues whatsoever in windows. didn't need to reinstall, or reactivate or anything. and that was with 64-bit vista as well.

safest bet would be to make sure your mobo supports the Q9550, the mobo's bios supports the Q9550, and that you back up any important stuff and be prepared to reinstall windows if something happens

Yeah I went to a Q6600 from an E2180. I did try it without reinstalling and it didnt work for me. I had to reinstall. Does it depend on your mobo?

check with ASus on the most recent bios revision for that quad, I know with xp you don't have to reinstall although vista can be tricky I guess :| I would still go for it and check asus most recent revision for the bios and that chip

You should be fine but as other people have stated anytime i do surgery on my PC i make sure anything important is backed up. When i went from single core to quad i just swapped chips ( went from 2160 to QX6850 LOL)

I just upgrade from a Q6600 to a Q9650, I didnt reinstall windows but it did ask me to activate it again. My system is unstable at the moment and I couldnt figure out why, I kept thinking I was sold a bunk chip, but now reading this, I think that maybe it.
