Default I replaced my stock cooler's TIM with AS5

My idle temps dropped 10 degrees. I'm now idling at 28-30 degrees.

Apparently, it takes awhile to cure fully, so I'll probably see an even more dramatic drop.

I'm about to run prime95 to check out my load temps. My cpu used to hit 80 degrees after a few minutes of it, but hopefully, that changes today.

Was it all the TIM, or did you clean out some dust bunnies too?

With AS5 it generally takes 150 / 200 hours to set as5 to help speed up that time run p5 for a while let cool do again and again. If its already dropped 10c then i suspect possibly 2/3c drop after its set.

I ran prime95 overnight. It never went over 60c. That's a 20c drop.

No dust bunnies.

I think I reseated the cooler better, because before, there would be a 3-5 degree difference between the two cores, but now they're nearly equal all the time.

Also the way you apply AS5 can affect the quality.

With anything C2D, you should lay down a straight line across the top of the CPU and then place the heatsink down, rub it left-right three to five times, and then stress test it constantly to help it set. At least, that's what their site says

I just take a dab of the stuff, put it on the middle, spread it around with my school ID card, and make sure it's all smooth. Then I proceed to use my computer and go ZOMG IT'S FAST.

How did you get such a drop? o_o Even for AS5, that's a bigger drop than normal

Depends on the heatsink. I recently read an article by a site that tested every kind of thermal paste at the time, along with application methods. I remember that they said to use the dot method when using a heatsink with circular base, line method when using a heatsink with square base, and parallel lines in the metal spacers between heatpipes for HDT heatsinks.

The problem with things being different

So it's possible that I could still get better temps by using a straight line then

Hehe, possibly. If you're interested, the article is here. Must read for air coolers, actually, I learned a lot from it
