I read that some P55 board's socket(Foxconn sockets I think?) will cause problem if you overclock a Core i5/i7 too much.
Does anyone know what kind of OC will cause this problem? Would it destroy the chip/socket if OC the i5 to 4.0Ghz? Also, generally speaking, how many i5 750s are capable of hitting 4.0Ghz stable? And what kind of voltage is generally required? (I can hit 4.0Ghz stable with 1.20v ish on my i7). Thanks everyone

I think that depends on the chip, motherboard and the type cooling on the clocks you'll get. I can't comment on the voltages, i don't own one.

that's why I asked generally, as many people were able to hit 4.0 on i7 920 D0 with around 1.2vwill be using aftermarket cooling for sure

Well the official stance the last I checked were it only happens in extreme overclocking scenarios, the official stance being that of Intel & Motherboard Manufacturers, despite a few of them changing to using solely LOTES or Tyko sockets, while the problem seems to only happen with Foxconn sockets it's also rather scarce to happen unless you're pumping in well over 1.5v & going for an overclock above 4.2GHz. If it were to happen with the usual overclocks of 3.6GHz - 4GHz it would have been by far more widespread already & we'd all stay clear of P55 altogether but that isn't the case, I still bought P55 even in light of the Foxconn socket & have a stable overclock. (Even if you get a Foxconn socket, it doesn't mean you'll have the problem, extreme overclocks have been achieved with Foxconn sockets on P55 aswell & been ok) In all honesty it's a little random there have been some reports of it happening at stock but while keeping an eye on the problem I didn't see a single shred of proof that it happened at anything less than an extreme overclock yet there probably were 1 or 2 go at stock but then you could say the same about every other platform & socket.

My friend managed an uber high clock on his i5 with nice temps and low volts. Can't quite remember it atm, and he's not on AIM. I can check back later though and maybe snag his CPUz validation link for ya.
From what I've heard, the 1156 suffers most from Foxconn socket issues. But other people HAVE stated that it's a widely prevalent issue, and that nothing is perfect

Basically if you've got the first generation foxconn socket (they are working on a new socket, but it wont be out for a while) giving your chip too much voltage will draw too much power and damage the CPUs contact pads.
From what I've read, as long as your i5 is drawing/getting less than a i7 needs then it should be fine. a lot of i5s are capable of 4GHz @ 1.25~. I've seen a few here that do sub 1.3 @ 4.
