Default New Overclocker- Possibilities?

Hey, I've been messin with computers for over 7 years now, but I'm relatively new to overclocking and have no idea about what the range of possibilities are with my new system.

My system (from my ignorant view) seems to be somewhat made for atleast some overclocking, but I am also rather concerned with going overboard and ruining my system. Anyways, here's my specs:

Case: 2-exhaust 3-intake fan X-Navigator (with 2 extra case fans, round cables, and professional wiring done to maximize airflow)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 CPU @ 2.4GHz
CPU Cooling: CoolerMaster Liquid CPU Cooling Fan System Kit & High Performance Thermal Compound on CPU
HDD: 300GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16M Cache 7200RPM Hard Drive
MOTHERBOARD: Asus P5W-DH I975X
RAM: 2GB 800mhz (2x1GB) Corsair XMS2 Xtreme Memory w/ Heat Spreader
OS: Windows® XP Professional X64
PSU: Thermaltake ToughPower 750 Watt - SLI Ready
Video: NVIDIA Geforce 7950 GT 512MB
Sound: Onboard 7.1 audio

I really have just three questions:

How much could I possibly overclock this system to

1) Without any worry of overheating, instability, or losing longevity
2) Max possible without any extra cooling
3) Max possible with extra cool

When I say max possible, I mean more realistically the max possibile for a first-time overclocker like myself without the possibility of doing something really stupid and frying my system.

Thank you for any help or information,

Ronny

You should be able to overclock very nicely.. I've got my e6600 at 3ghz on air (not stock air).. and it could run much faster.

I've also heard of people getting the e6600 up to 3.6 on stock air, which is pretty damn good.

With that wc system (assuming its a decent one, i dont use them so i dont know), I bet you could break 4ghz.

That's one heck of an easy board to overclock with.

My suggestion for that E6600 is to see if you can get it upto 3.0ghz.
So let's start by you trying to set everything at AUTO, except for the RAM and timings.

So Timings should read 4-4-4-8 (or try a 4-4-4-12) and CPU's FSB at 333. Use a 4:5 ratio which will bring the RAM to DDR2 833 and use a 2.1 or 2.2V.

Good luck.

Totally off the subject, but FYI. I had a rig almost just like that and using a sound card rather than onboard gave me 10 more FPS in games. If you want a performance boost i would buy a sound card like a audigy 2 ZS or even a X-Fi. Depending on your budget. Onboard eats up your processor.

As for the overclocking, i'm not a overclocker, but that should overclock really well.

Here is the deal. It is practically impossible to damage your computer as long as you play smart. Overclocking will not damage your system, but temperature and voltage will. Temperature will not be a problem with the water cooling, so now you are down to voltage. The way overclocking works is, you increase the FSB as far as you can until the computer becomes unstable. Once it is unstable, you increase the voltage. On the P5W DH and E6600, you should reach a northbridge bottleneck before you reach a processor bottleneck. However, I would start by setting your voltage to the max Intel suggested (1.35V). Increase the Northbridge voltage to 1.65 (or 1.85 if your motherboard has the option). Increase the memory voltage to whatever the memory is designed for (BIOS normally defaults to 1.8V, although most memory is suppose to be 2.1V). Now increase your FSB. I would start with 350Mhz FSB, with an expected FSB of around 400Mhz. Keep memory in 1:1.

Here is a thread dedicated to P5W DH problems and fixes in reference to overclocking.
