I cannot emphasize how p'od I am because of my uncles compy. As some of you know, it started doing random reboots and shutdowns. Well, I took it down to my compy shop, baffled, that it wasnt a virus or PSU gone bad. I had them check the CPU and mobo. They had said it was the mobo. I sent it in for an RMA, and got it back. Plugged it up and it worked, for about the first two times it was on. Then, the symptoms started again. I came here for help, and you guys said it was the RAM. I sent those in for RMA, and just barely got them today. It fired up once, then the symptoms arised AGAIN!!!!!! GAH!!!! I am ready to take a 12 gauge to it! Anyways, what to do?
Specs: PentD 930 G-Byte GA-8I945P-G Generic 430W PSU (I tested this in my sys, and tried the compy with my PSU, IT'S FINE) WD Caviar 250GB SATAII Drive Corsair VS 2GB Kit DDR2-667 Asus Radeon X300 128mb PCI-e vid (could this be the culprit? I'm ready to take the oddest remedies right about now) I think that's about it... Thanks for ANY suggestions.

My first take would be the PSU. although it works in your rig, his demands more power (CPU!)
Did you try your PSU in his rig?

How random are the reboots? If totally random, I again suspect the PSU. It might not be bad, but maybe just not enough juice for that rig (18A on 12V rail I guess??)
If there is some pattern you might want to check temps.... Generally, a faulty video card should not result in random reboots. If that's the issue, the system tends to freeze instead of reboot. If PSU and Temps are ok, run memtest86 and check if the RAM is ok.

The reboots and shutdowns are more random than the most complex randomizer. I will, as I stated, check the PSU tomorrow. Right now, sleepy time.

Ok, switched out the PSU from the generic @Power 430W 20pin 17A on the 12V to a MSI 450W SLI-Ready 18A on 12V 24-pin ATX. Same thing. But I am going to take to another compy shop and have them run a full diag on this headache.

We have Dells at work that have what seems to be (at the moment) a(nother) Dell specific electrical fault that causes resetting or random shutting down.
__________________Check the capacitors on the mobo have perfectly flat tops and sides (well they are cylinders but you get what i mean).. if they are swolen in any way then this is causing your problem.

Going Broke Overclocking
![]() |
A sticking or defective case switch may cause that. Did you try disconnectiong it and start by jumping the 2 pins manually?

Just recently I was given a laptop to trouble shoot since it had the same symptoms as yours is. The cause was the hard drive. Basically the head kept getting stuck. Cuasing it to reboot. Why I dunno. If anyone could explain that .. much apretiated.
__________________Secondly I'd recomend booting into safe mode. Try doing something that would cause the comp to reboot. If it still reboots in safe mode. There is a possibility that its related to a corrupted file in windows (if thats what you are using). Thats my two cents. Hope it helps.
