Default good day gone bad HELP! :S

long story short. cleaning rig and reseating hs cuz temps was a bit high (spring coming and got to 62F outside and cpu running 42C stock O_o)

get it back on. boot up. no video.
take the hs off again. notice 2x loose capasitors right above the main pcie-16 slot. im like OMG NO WAY touch them and nearly freak.

straighten them back up. boot up again. no video.

so. i put gfx card in lower pcie16 slot. nothing still.

take out ram

get a series of beeps. (weird if mobo is dead why would it beep)

ok so now im wondering. did i discharge static on the back of gfx card when puting hs on? did a drop of sweat drip somewhere :S ?

i think its either the mobo or gfx card. im not sure though. any ideas?

edit: on top of that. i bent the darn plastic pin on the hs... so it wont stay on so back to stock fan

I have no honestly no idea what it could be, but I'll try and help with ideas.
  • Are the capacitors still completely attached to the mobo? Can you tell if either of those metal "prongs" (not sure what they are called, lol) underneath the capacitors have snapped off the mobo?
  • Doesn't the series of beeps tell you what is wrong? How many beeps are you getting? It's possible it could tell you what those beeps mean in the manual?
  • IMO, I have found it is best to troubleshoot with everything out of the case when you can't figure what the problem is. At least it should eliminate the possibility of the mobo being in contact of the case. Who know's?
  • Also, you are obviously on another PC; can you test the video card (x1900xt I assume) with another mobo to make sure it is still in working order?

Hope it helps...it would suck to lose that mobo & other parts with it.

PS: You haven't listed your HSF, so not sure which hardware you're talking about.

Unhappy

this pc uses agp and is a sempron. cant try that

the beeps came when i removed all the ram. (to test if the mobo was working)

that part seems to work. although i seem to have lost power to my i/o and to my pci stuff.

when i had the hard drive pluged in. it made noise. so it seemed to be "seeking" for information. that implies that the cpu/ram is good

only issues are
no power/signal to usb ports/pci/pcie

cant tell of they are totaly secure. but. when i touched them today. they didnt move anywhere near as much as last night. (could they have resecured themselves?)

edit: hs is an infinity. (i fixed the plastic pin for mounting)

Maybe one of the cables you touched went a bit loose? Try re-plugging some of the cables such as the 4-pin power connector.

already removed mobo and checked it all (back side of the capasitors is looking right.)

and remounted and tested it (including the 8 pin (use it instead of 4)) with just ram cpu gfx card and the power hooked up with the power button.

Sounds like the card to me. The change from having memory to not having memory is normal. Does your GPU fan start up? Also if you just let it turn on does it post and load windows, to the point where you hear the intro sound? Try that both with the card in and without maybe? I'm not real sure any other way of testing it without other parts to transfer. Also try resetting your Cmos? I'm outta ideas after that.

I had a similar problem, I swapped over to another, (newer) monitor and it went away.

Have you tried replacing the loose caps? If you only got abnormal POST beeps after removing the RAM, the beeps were b/c the RAM was out. You can get replacement electrolytic capacitors from Digikey.com.
