Default Penryn Socket?

I'm thinking about future upgrades and wondering what kind of socket Penryn will require. I know its release is still far off, but has there been any mention of this? It's unlikely it'll fit in a 775 mobo I would imagine.

Penryn is socket 775 so i wouldn't worry about that, although the trouble with Penryn is the VRM required for a motherboard to support it. Few current motherboards are rumoured to support it.

Still don't know if mine will...

Hmmm...yeah I was wondering if mine would as well. Perhaps a BIOS update would allow for support. Or is VRM physical hardware?

Penryn will only be available for notebooks and will be the sucessor of the Merom core (Core 2 Duo T5000/T7000 series mobile processors).. The desktop version of the Penryn is code named "Wolfdale" and I think these will use socket 775.

Chuckcalo: Penryn is the name of the manufacturing process (45nm). Wolfdale is the Code name for the chips like (Conroe & Kentsfield). But i could be wrong...

VRM is some kind of small voltage feature as far as i know...But i would imagine most of the native 1333(QDR) boards will support Penryn with a simple Bios update. Other boards may require some kind of mod...

They did it with the Bad Axe2...so

Penryn, Wolfsdale and the other version will fit in 775 motherboards, but there's a mod required as far as I know.

The one they had on display was on a 975X board, but they pointed out the voltage physical mod on the motherboard. It was covered with a heatsink that's normally not on that same motherboard.

My best guess is... It won't work on any of our motherboards, sadly.

It's a physical mod on the motherboard, hidden under a blue heatsink near the processor socket.
