I was looking for help with a new build I am doing in which everything seemed like it would be in perfect working condition, and once I finished everything I powered it on, but I heard a wierd noise go a few times, I thought it might be a fan or something but I shut it off immediately. My 80 chip showed 81, which in my motherboard manual said start power on sequence. I have an Abit AW9D-MAX motherboard, and an 8800gts inside. (it is an awesome build and I am very worried) The 8800 gts box says that it requires a minimum of 26 amps on the 12volt rail, I have an AMS 550watt PSU with four 12v rails, but each has either 9 15 or 8 amps. Will the PSU be able to shift amps between the rails by itself or instead will it just not work at all? The video card came with an adapter that plugs two 4 prong power connectors into the one 6 prong that fits into the video card, would it work to use two seperate 12v rails simultaneously? Or do I not even have to worry because the PSU can somehow deal with it regardless of how it is setup?
__________________I am going to retry booting but from out in the open because my case seems to be a deathtrap. I could not physically fit the 8800 gts in the case. It fit in where the part is that clicks when you get a video card in it did fine, but at the other end where the dvi slots are I had to bend the metal lines between pci slots out away from the video card because that would bend the metal just enough for the video card to fit, because otherwise the some of the pins on the video card would not be in. Any advice would be appreciated, I want to know whether or not it is safe for me to use my power supply before I attempt booting again in the open.

Was the noise you heard a beeping sound? If so that's the indicator on the 8800 that not enough power is being supplied so it won't boot properly, which indicates you need a better supply. I'd recommend a more powerful supply with higher amperage on the 12V rails. PSU's don't transfer current from varying rails.

Well if I plugged two different rails into the same video card using the adaptor the video card came with that splits the 6 pin into two 4 pin connectors, would that work? And yes it was a beeping I think and I apologize but I made a horrible mistake. My motherboard has a third power connector that is specifically for providing the pci-e slots with power, and I did not have it plugged in because every motherboard I have had did not have a third power slot, I think this is the main reason for the problem. I am going to attempt another boot but I am worried if it does not work it will damage parts, would this be the case, or would under powering do nothing but prevent a successful boot?

__________________+ I tried it again with the other connector plugged in now. The beeping went away, but it still did not boot correctly. Two LEDs were flashing alternatively left then right, and the little 80 post chip was showing all different combinations, like it was changing so fast I would not be able to give you one single number combination it showed because there were too many changing too fast, what could this possibly mean?

__________________So no one has ever seen the bios chip flash all different numbers while the lights alternate on the board? Do you think I just need a new power supply, or is it something more important than that? (I also kind of forced the intel heatsink in roughly if that could have damaged something.)

The only problem is I have like nothing plugged in that could be messed up because all that is in is the cpu ram and video card as well as the power plugs, and all that is fine, and the motherboard is on one of those anti static bags that motherboards come in, and that is on top of a glass desk, so it can't be shorting out I don't think

Dude, your power supply is fine. 8800GTSs will run fine off of a decent 500w, so that shouldn't be the problem. I would combine two of the 12v rails with the adapter to plug into the video card like you were saying, you won't hurt anything doing that, don't worry. Let us know the results after you get the PCI-E power plugged in and two of the 12-volt rails combined.

I have to share my opinion on this. I had a basic PSU, one that came with my case for exemple. It is really important to not cheap out on the power supply. It's like trying to make a formula 1 run on milk (Exagerating a bit). Since, like the above post says, any 100$+ PSU is worth it. It's a good price to aim for, look up some reviews. My Seasonic comes with lots of connectors.
Read through your mobo manual and make shure your checked everything. How did it go out of the case? My graphics card has trouble going in my case, which makes me understand why people buy expensive cases. You could try reseating you CPU heatsink since you said you rushed it. Post back with some info if you do.
