Default Intel BX2 Overclocking causes POST errors

I just put together a new machine and I wanted to look into overclocking it. I messed around with the settings a little but I couldn't find anytihng (albeit I didn't look long in fear I could fry something) that would allow even a modest overclock without POST errors on startup.

I have:

Intel D975XBX2 Motherboard
Intel Quad Core 2.4GHZ
OCZ "Extreme" 800Mhz DDRII

A fast hard drive, and an NVidia 8600 GTS (I'll worry about overclocking this thing later).

Does anyone out there have any baseline settings to get this overclocked?

My cooling is an Ultra Case w/700w powersupply (2 very big but quiet fans, one air duct right over the CPU Fan). I have a Thermaltake Silent 775D CPU Fan. Since work bought all this gear for me and had it shipped (no cost to me), I couldn't complain about stuff like chincing out on the fan . I have a Koolance Exos I could put on this thing with a different socket type, and based on what I should expect from either air or liquid, I'd do it if it meant a significant increase in overclockability.

Where do I get started? My last machine was based on a DFI lanparty and with liquid I had a 2.8GHZ CPU running at 3.556GHZ. I was hoping to get at least 3.2 out of this thing.

Anyone have some suggestions?

Thanks!
D

First do you have an adequate psu? Did you update the bios also? Lots of mobos ship with the original bios. What bios settings pertaining to oc'ing do you have set so far?

Well, the first thing I started screwing around with was the clock multiplier and some voltage. I have not applied any BIOS patches so I'll probably do that first.

PSU is 700w I'm assuming you are referring to the Power Supply Unit.

On my old DFI I had to manually set the bus clocks, disable "spread spectrum" whatever that was, and loosen the memory timings to get any overclocking that was significant. And I had to install some 500MHZ ram which at the time was "hot" for RAM.

I'll apply the patches and try again.

I guess from an overall perspective, I want to increase the clock multiplier without increasing voltage, increasing a little at a time until the system stabilizes? I was also a little curious about what I can expect from this setup. If I HAVE to liquid cool I will but I'd rather not because this system is super-quiet.

i have that board and for what kind of OC you want its perfect from what I have gathered its very stable and I have heard that it can handle a FSB of 500+ note in overclocking make sure you know where the jumper on the board is right by the CMOS and here is the comprehensive on this board http://www.peakin.com/xbx2/ happy OCing
