Default Intel Gaming PC Build

Right, new to the forum, but would like to think im abit clued up on computers but not at all on overclocking!

Looking to build my machine first

Currently i have:
P4 32bit 3Ghz, Running on a Gigabyte 8KNXP Board with 752mb Ram. 7600GS 256mb PNY AGP card, about 1TB or space over 3 IDE Drives 3dmark06 gives around 2000points.. and that seems very bad!

Shopping List:
Asus Striker Extreme Intel 775 SLi
Intel Core (Please recommend)
Thermaltake Armor
Nvidia 8800GTX/GTS or GT (Advice would be great!)
4GB 1000Mhz Ram
60GB SATA Operating System Drive
500GB SATA Storage
Cooling System (Want something that will perform but will also be silent)

Power supply im very unsure of, once again, would like performance and silence, but im sure they dont go.

Other items like DVD Drive, writers i will swap over

Any help would be great, thanks

Corsair Hx620watt for PSU, It's completely silent, powerful, and it's Corsair so the components are very high quality. It's even modular! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139002

http://www.overclock.net/hardware/sh...uct/647/cat/11 For OCN reviews

Also I'd go with the 8800gt 512 mb (if you can find it for a good price) or 8800gts 512mb (g92)

Thanks Sm3gH3ad, will a 620W Power supply be alright for a gaming rig? If so will add to my list

well you do not need the striker extreme, its just a huge rip off, if you need an Sli board get the Evga 680i which is cheaper and better. Secondly you don't need 1000mhz RAM unles you have extra cash to spend. Here is a list of what i suggest you to get.

CPU:Intel core 2 quad Q6600
Mobo: DFI Iron blood
RAM:2 or 4 GB of G.skill, DDR2 800 ram
GFX:8800GTS or 8800GT
HDD:320GB seagate 7200.10
PSU:corsair Hx620
Case:cooler master 690 (doesn't really matter which case you get, just make sure i looks good to you and has good airflow.)
CPU Cooler:Tuniq tower or Thermalright ultra 120 extreme

You might as well get a 780i motherboard.

the Striker Extreme was recomended on alot of sites thats all and does look pritty nice.

Thanks for the spec list. will have a good look at prices online etc. would you recomend water cooling as a more silent option? or abit to costly

Also, why the Intel core 2 quad Q6600? whats better than this? and at what price would i be paying out.

thanks alot guys your a great help

No problem, I'm pretty sure620 watts would be enough to run 2 8800 Ultra's in SLI so it should do you fine.

the striker extreme apparently rocks with C2Ds but doesn't overclock quads well.

i'd go with a C2Q 6600 (it's a great value as far as quad cores go), geforce 8800GT, 780i board

i'd also recommend a much larger system drive than 60GB, you could get a 75 or 150GB WD raptor (10k RPM) as a system drive, and a larger storage drive as you said, your system would be snappier.

depending on how much you want to spend on cooling, you can get excellent results from the thermalright ultra 120 extreme with a low RPM fan for near-silent operation and much better cooling than the stock heatsink. keep in mind, that'll cost you near to $70-80USD (35-40 pounds i guess). on the other hand, a good cheap cooler is the arctic cooling freezer 7 pro, which should run about 10 pounds or so ($22USD here in the US on newegg).

one final thing - i'd go with a slightly more powerful power supply.

I would not take that Striker if I were you, way too many problems with it, especially the CPUINIT error. For that price, aim for the X38 or 780i SLI. If money isn't a problem, I would still go with the GTX over the G92GTS over the GT, because the GTX still performs a better when overclocked than the G92GTS.
