Default VAIO Laptop, wireless issue

My sister has a Sony Vaio. It's 2 - 3 years old and worked fantastic up until now. The symptoms for the problem are:

1 - sound doesn't work
2 - wireless issue

the wireless issue is that the computer finds the network, but only the computer. In the taskbar the little bubble notification will pop up saying that it has detected wireless networks but when we go to open that up and select one that it has found it will display not a single one.

So we called on the warranty and they sent a guy out who replaced the motherboard. That was my guess too... apparently that isn't it. Maybe the drivers? But hey, give your best guys and gals!
