Default im confused

a while ago i got some virtumonde.dll virus and it

.caused keystroke errors probly because of a keylogger

.slowed my comp down pretty much everywhere

.put a bunch of pop-ups when i used the interent

.put a desktop picture on that said my comp was infected and needed software

.shut off the firewall and erased all the restore points

ok so we had some guy from McAffee come onto our computer remotely and remove it manually after i tried using a bunch of scanning and removal programs to get rid of it. i got rid some other stuff but not virtumonde.dll because i guess it was able to replicate itself if there were any files remaining after a clean

well my computer is still running slower than usual like slower than before i got the virus.

i have:

.ran defrag a bunch of times, the disk looks like 1 solid blue bar, i green bar and 2 friggin white bars, very unfragmented.

.used CCleaner and cleaned all unused files and invalid registry entries

.virus scanned with multiple programs

MY COMPUTER IS STILL SLOWER THAN NORMAL. WHY??

i looked at doing PC restore but i guess my comp doesnt have a partition for doing that so that option is gone. and i dont have the money to get another windows CD.

does anyone have any idea what could be causing this drop in performance?

basically everything in general is just slower.

web browser takes way longer to load
document pages take longer to load
my online gaming has worse fps and glitches and locks up once in a while
installing looks more sluggish

its not a giant difference but it is noticable

????
my internet download speed and all that is the same as it ever was

Either try avg (free download) or lavasoft adware. If nothing is found try an online scanner such as panda or norton. They won't remove it, but tell you what they found. Then use google to find the .exe that is bad stuff and how to remove it. It will be a long process if you have something major.

1. start in safe mode...
2. find the viruses yourself and delete them

or

What I like to do is run a "process explorer", and stop the threads that have the virus running. Then delete every trace of it I can find which also includes running "Hijack This". Then stop any sign of it starting again under msconfig and finally reboot.

Backup anything you want to keep, format the HDD and reinstall Windows.

I have gotten that virus before and found the best way to get rid of it is smitfraudfix.exe.

Here's a link to download it and instructions on how to use it.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php

I also would recomend Nod32 for virus protction...as I have been using it for a little over a year now and have not been infected (knock on wood). It has a 30-day free trial at www.eset.com

It has an absolutely tiny footprint and barely uses any system resources...unlike Norton.

Agreed....but if you can;t afford a new XP CD (like you mentioned) then I would try the smitfraudfix first.

Don't forget to disable the "System Restore" feature first, then scan in Safe Mode.
