If only gaming do E8400/HD4870. What I am running is more then enough for 1680x1050 and I'm not much faster over one HD4870 when I run at stock.

E8400 and hd4870, higher cpu clock and faster gfx card will yield better results in gaming, either setup though would be sufficient, and you can overclock both so I would go with whatevers cheaper, and I wouldnt worry about quad vs. dual core just what would be the best performance I could achieve after an overclock of either.

I think the E8400/HD 4870 combo is best here. This is the combination I plan on utilizing with my gaming rig. You'll get better gaming performance from the E8400 than the Q9450 and the HD 4870 owns its younger brother. The 4870 might be a little much for your resolution, but you should be able to play everything maxed.

this is a super easy decision - e8400 + hd4870. and yes the e8400 will trample the q9450 in benchmarks as well.
