I would go to Office Depot and get a $400 laptop. They usually have sales on them everyother week. Get one with a low end dual core, 1GB of RAM, 15in screen.
THen get 2GB of ram from newegg. You will then have 2GB and 512MB, 2.5GB, which will make the computer seem fast to the average user. From Newegg: Acer Toshiba

I just noticed there is a laptop section. Oops. How do you install RAM? If I recall, RAM is touchy. If you touch it the wrong way, it's useless.
