I am new to OCing, but would like to look into it with my new system.
__________________What I am looking for are some realistic expectations of what I could achieve on my system. I don't want to fry the thing, and I don't need to break any records... system is a E8500 on a x48t dq6 with a 9500 Zalman on it, connected to a coolermaster realpower 850M and a 4870X2. My memory is by OCZ, a 1333mhz DDR3 7-7-7-20 set of 2x 2G. I am having a hard time figuring out how to OC the memory, I guess because the DDR3 standard has mainly been used by experienced enthousiasts so far there are few beginners guides with these specs in mind. So I could use a little help. Apart from an estimate for OC results, I am also looking to find a basic anwer to a (probably) very basic question. Do you OC memory separately from the CPU or are they both bound to the FSB of your mainboard? In other words, can I OC only my CPU? thanks Bram

Hey Bram
Welcome to OCN!Fill in your system specs here. It's good to have another Dutchy around ![]() To answer your question, the normal ratio DDR3 runs at is (FSB DR3) 1:2. So if your FSB is at 400Mhz, your ram will run @ 800Mhz (multiply by 2 for DDR makes 1600Mhz).I'm not sure about Gigabyte, but on Asus X48 boards you can just set/change that ratio by changing the DRAM frequency in the BIOS.

Cool thanks, if anyone stumbles upon a recent OC guide... I ll be glad to study it, not being lazy posting here, just not finding a noobguide for x48 boards.

![]() Well I just ordered an Asus P5E3 Premium board, which is an X48 board with DDR3. With a bit of luck I can help you out soon enough ![]()

Hey cool!
__________________This is where I got confused a bit: (tom's hardware) E8500: 9.5x333 = 3.16 GHz and then, on mem it says: DDR3-1333 (PC3-10666) 9-9-9-24 The first part is self-explanatory (DDR3 memory). • The number after it is the data transfer rate. Simply divide it by 4 to get the maximum FSB speed for which the module is rated. Example: 1600/4 = 400 MHz. Therefore, DDR3-1600 can work on systems with a FSB of up to 400 MHz (anything more and you’re lucky). so then...DDR3 memory 1333mhz (like mine) can work on systems with a FSB of up to 333mhz? And since the 8500 MP is locked, does that mean I cannot increase the FSB of the mainboard? Am I wrong? Am I wrong?

Your memory can most likely run higher then what it's rated at (specially since it's OCZ), but you might have to up the volts on it a bit and/or loosen the timings.
I'm not a 100% about FSB:RAM ratio settings that are possible (it's been over a year since my last Intel board), but you can probably set a lower divider making your RAM run slower then your FSB.
