What will be intereseting, AM3 backwards compatible with AM2/+ Chipsets, but not vice versa. I doubt this will be the case for the new socket by Intel (anyone know its name?)

Pretty sound advice there, as others have said, you'll see a good boost in synthetic benchmarking, but you'd probably never even notice the difference in a real world gaming environment. To be brutally honest, I barely noticed a difference in how games run when going from my old single core Opteron to this quad core machine. CPUs really just don't play that critical a role in gaming performance.

hmm well this has put me more on the fence, but frankly, i am sick of this 6400+ its sounds nice, but it really is a brick wall of a chip. i can barely even get it stable at 3.4 now and thats after i swapped out stock cooling for a TRUE.

and i am just not willing to pay whatever intel will charge for its next lineup (probably ~1k)
i am paying just over 300 for both of these parts which seems like a great deal for the money to me, but i am going to have to think this over again.

thanks for the advice! reps all around :P

highly reccomend the upgrade.
You saw a good increase because of your resolution. With a 26" TV your probably running 1368x768 if it's 720P. That's less pixels then 1280x1024 so it's more CPU dependent. 1920x1200/1080 is much more GPU bound as stated before.

Well, if you're looking for big numbers, don't really count on the Q6600 doing much more than your 6000+, maybe 3.6GHz range. Depending on the VID you get, it may even be worse, mine runs too hot to even run 3.4GHz on a TRUE.

i went from a AMD x2 4400 clocked at 2.9ghz and i noticed a HUGGEEE boost in games. Some games there wasnt much improvement but in others like GRID and UT3 my fps almost doubled..

I know your X2 is clocked at 3.4ghz but i still think you will notice a big difference
