and i am just not willing to pay whatever intel will charge for its next lineup (probably ~1k)
i am paying just over 300 for both of these parts which seems like a great deal for the money to me, but i am going to have to think this over again.

thanks for the advice! reps all around :P
well i went from a naked 939x2 to my current system

i only had a slight increase in games maybe 10fps in crysis but that can also be attributed to ddr2 1100 but if you are interested in anything productivity wise from encoding to programs like 3dsmax and graphic design like i am the gains are insane and i just went to a dual core and programs like that can use all 4 cores

and do some reasearch on the 780's they are really nice boards IMO

oh and your right about the prices

you will shart a cinder block when you see it if current trends are anything to go by

well i photoshop a TON and work with large TIF files (~1gb a file) so hopefully i would see an increase in that.

Wow, extreme photography...

I've noticed a huge difference going from my 3.0GHz X2 to this E8400, especially when physics is involved (ie. games and my thesis). Better performance per clock and per watt too.

Q6600 should help a lot in the photoshop department even if you only overclock it to say 3.2ghz as I believe photoshop is quad core optimized and so are most other "like" applications. If you do not wish to spend around a thousand for Intels new line up coming up (cpu, mobo, ram at least) then I'd grab the processor / mobo and then see how well it suits you, maybe sell the rig down the line for some new build funds.

Q>E in Intel Processors, for those who shutdown EVERY program on the PC to play those people benefit more from Exxxx series.
But If you don't want to turn of everything and still get good FPS go for Quad

Maybe q6600 would be faster at 3.4, for 3.6 on air you must have luck to be really stable. It would be better for you to go with c2d and OC it past 4.0, than you would see difference.

old thread, but finally installed my q6600 and 780i.
i get ~40 FPS in far cry 2 on ultra high 4xAA at 1920x1200, literally every other game (i dont consider crysis a game, its a benchmark) runs silky smooth at 60+ fps maxed out.

photoshop effects apply MUCH faster, i can work with huge TIF files much easier now.

also my computer boots up like twice as fast (?) nice little side effect.

i have yet to even overclock it yet because the 780i BIOS is still completely unknown to me, but i am looking forward to pushing this chip to the limit.

all in all, i am glad i bought it. couldnt be more happy.
