G'day All,
Only just joined up today and now looking at a new project. I don't really have a budget (within reason - don't really want to break the $1500 mark but still flexible) I'm going to buy it part by part, need to find a good case first. I still don't know whether I am going to go AMD or INTEL I don't really know enough about them to decide either. I used to have a AMD in a laptop and the bloody thing burnt a hole in my table cloth (it got really hot). I am wanting to play games on the machine, nothing to graphical things like counter strike, battlefield, need for speed etc. And apart from that I will be using it for the basics, internet, movies, music etc etc etc. I'm sick of having laptops that lag and lock up all the time and don't like multitasking, so I'm going back to a desktop and thought it would be a bit of fun building it myself. I've had a bit of a play around with computers in the past (change HDD, install RAM, Wireless Network Card etc. ) and my old man is in the I.T field so he also gives me a bit of a hand when needed. So recomendations would be great from people, along with rough prices would be good. Not looking at screen, keyboard, mouse, speakers cause I'm planning on doing this slowly as it will be a learning curve and I'm not a rich bugger (i'll have to save the money to get the part). I'll get the externals once the machine is done. I'll put this same thing in the AMD forum and see what recommendations I get. Thanks in advance |

Intel Overclocker

Intel is great for a avid user whos looking to start computing. I started with a Intel computer and just overclocked that thing til it burned back with P4's lol. $1500 is a great budget for a Intel Build and you get great performance out of it.
Welcome to OCN btw, If you need help looking for parts, feel free to pm me.

When you say $1500 are these American Dollars you are talking about?
And since you want pick your case first, you need to know whether you are going to water cool or air cool. Intel is what most people here use, and I would recommend an Intel CPU as well. However, an AMD CPU would not be bad as well. $1500 can you get you an excellent system that will play every game on the market smoothly.

The $1500 was really ment to be in Australian Dollars, but still as I said I am flexible and since alot of people here are from the U.S I'll change it to $1500 U.S maybe even a little more if it will give me alot more proformance etc.
Any recomendations with parts yet? Don't really know much about water cooling - after looking on the net at pictures of some systems with water cooling, i must admit it does look nice. Is this water cooling thing recommended? To me water+electricity = big no no.... but obviously there is some distinctive advantages. Last edited by aus_07 : 08-20-08 at 02:33 AM. |

Alright. Here's a build suggestion.
E7200 $120 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115052 Gigabyte EP45 -DS3L $105 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128345 RAM $70 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820211166 Antec Sonata Designer Case + 500W Antec Earthwatts $160 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129036 Seagate 500GB HDD $80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148288 Samsung DVD burner $25 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151171 HIS Radeon HD3870 $130 ($120 after MIR) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161218 $690 And if you don't have Windows XP, add this for $85 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116056 And it'll total $775 (I'm assuming you're not overclocking, and there's no real need to overclock with this rig for the games you play)

For Aircooling build.
Cases with good airflow for keeping your parts well ventilated for Antec 300 Antec 900 Antec 1200 Coolermaster 590 Coolermaster 690 Antec P182 Power Supplies makers that put out quality psu's Corsair PC power and cooling Enermax Seasonic Antec earthwatts series Vid Cards - 9800gtx+ gtx 260 gtx280 4850 4870 RAM- I recommend minimum 2gig. 4gig for a gaming rig is <3 I personally went from 2gig to 4gig and noticed a considerable difference. Corsair Dominators G Skill CPUs- if you strictly game dual core is the way to go. If you do CAD work, video encoding, photoshop stuff, or are a heavy multi tasker quad core is the way to go. Dual cores- E7200 E8400 E8500 E8600 Quad Cores Q6600 Q6700 Q9450 Q9550 Motherboards if you plan on only running single card solutions you can use any of these boards. But if you plan on running 2 of the vid cards Intel Chipsets for ATi and Nvidia Chipsets for SLI Intel Chipsets- For crossfiring ATI Vid cards Asus X38 models Asus X48 models DFI X38 models DFI X48 models Gigabyte P45 models Nvidia Chipsets- for SLI Nvidia cards EVGA 750i FTW EVGA 780i FTW EVGA 780i XFX 780i Hard drives- Western Digital AAK series Seagate 7200.11 series Samsung F1 Spinpoint series Raptors Velociraptor Heatsinks- If you get either of the first two make sure you buy the bolt through retention brackets for them so you get a stable seating and good contact. OCZ Vendetta 2 Xigmatek S1283 Thermalrite Ultra Extreme (TRUE) Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Operating system i recommend Vista 64bit. I haven't had any issues with software or hardware compatibility. But if you dont want to go Vista there is always XP. You can pick and choose from those parts to fit within a reasonable budget and be assured you are getting quality and performance for what you pay. Obviously optical drive is up to you

thanks mate... I've been told that vista 64bit alot of stuff doesn't run on it. What sort of things won't run on it (older things)
I don't know much about this overclocking thing. I wanted a 3.0 gh/z preferably... and 4 gig ram i reckon just incase i decide to do other things with it in the future |
