should be: Present Value x ( 1+ interest rate)n, where n is the period.

If your calculations are correct though.. then I'll be heading over to the bank tomorrow to get myself a CD, lol.
Yeah:

PV= $2,000
N= 5
IR/Y= 4.86
PMT= 0 (since there is no additional payment being made each pay period)
therefore FV= $2,535.59

PV( 1+ I)n (n is superscript)
$2,000 (1.0486)5 (again, superscript 5)= $2,535.59

I thought 79000 in 5 years sounded retardedly huge. I invest when I can (for a college student) and I know that can't be right. CDs are VERY conservative investments and rarely yield a high return. TBH, 4.0% is pretty crappy. While he is young, he might as well live on the wild side and invest in some mutual funds or *gasp* the stock market himself.

That is, if he doesn't blow it 2 280GTXs and an uber-rig. =P

tell me more about these "mutual funds" they sound better then cds lol. also is it a bad idea to buy nvidia stock now... i mean the price will go up whenever they switch places with ati right? then sell the nvidia and buy ati, does that sound like a good idea?

I'm sorry but you don't drive a GT500KR that your parents paid for. If mommy and daddy can buy and insure an 80,000 dollar car for you, you wouldn't be running AMD.

You can't go intel now, think of:

Intel does it first, AMD does it right!
