I would get a single 300GB Velociraptor and one or two 640GB AAKS from Western Digital. The veloci itself is fast, and it will save HDD space in your case. The 640AAKS is the fastest 7200RPM-high capacity drive out right now. And again, I prefer to not mess with RAID but that is up to you.

Corsair 1000HX $220.49 (Buy.com) $20 MIR makes it $200.49

WD 640AAKS $79.99 You could get one or two of these for storage

WD Velociraptor 300GB $279.99 $20 MIR You could get this or two 150GB for RAIDO, but I don't like messing with RAID for OS drives

2x EVGA GTX260 Core 216 $599.98 $20 MIR

G Skill 2x2GB DDR21066 $109.99

evga 750i FTW $180

Q9550 $324.99 You can get this for $280 at Fry's, or after Oct. 19 the price might come down at NewEgg, but by then the EO stepping should be out so it may still cost the same.

Total: $1724.04
fixed

with that kind of budget i would say save for the core i& and X58. there not that far off now. and by the looks of it it might just leave the current CPU's dead in the ground. they are so efficient at lower frequencies then the current CPU's at high frequencies

CORSAIR 1000HX
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
ASUS Rampage Extreme LGA 775 Intel X48
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz
ATI RADEON HD 4870 X2
Unless you plan on going CrossFire, drop down to the 750 Watt Corsair PSU. Even if you CrossFire 2x 4870 X2s the 750 Watt could almost handle it, though I wouldn't advise it. But it could handle any dual single core cards.

Other than that, drop the DDR3 IMO. Negligible gains, and more money spent with DDR3.

Don't hold out for Nehalem, it doesn't show big gains at all for gaming so far. Not to mention the huge price tag of the CPU, coupled with the X58 mobos, + the expensive DDR3. Don't even get me started on the whole "No mem voltage over 1.65" thing. Though to be fair we don't know how it will play out, so far it isn't looking all THAT good.
You could wait for the price drops associated with Nehalem's release though.

Finally, someone who is informed!

However, I would still go with the 1000W PSU. Most power supplies are most efficient and will last longest if they are not strained to 100%. I would be afraid that with a 750W PSU you will be consuming the majority of its power output at all times with a high end rig like you will be building. This could ultimately prove to be very stressful and reduce the life of the PSU. I don't know the amp rating on the 12v rail of the 1000HX from Corsair but I assume it's pretty hefty. This is also a requirement of a good PSU.

And is the 1000HX modular? That spells FTW if you ask me.

Corsair 1000W - +12V1@40A, +12V2@40A
Corsair 750W - +12V@60A

His rig described above would be fine on a 750W.

You can see here a here an E6750 rig with 4870 X2 and x48 mobo was only drawing 460W for the entire rig, at full 3D load.

Throw in an extra 150W to adjust for this guy's rig and your still only at 610W. I'm not being super accurate here, just getting a very general idea.

Unless he goes dual 4870 X2, he would be fine with a 750W PSU.
