Brandon's Core i7 Build! November 23, 2008 Hello OCN It's that time of year to treat myself with some tasty new hardware, and I need your help! ![]() My budget is going to be around 1000$, but I don't plan on getting a COMPLETELY new system altogether. I just want to make the transition to Core i7 while keeping as many of the current parts I have as I can. I want to get the Core i7 920, and I will be overclocking it, *hopefully* to the magical 4GHz mark if I can ![]() I'm also going to pair the new chip with the ASUS P6T Deluxe Motherboard, and thankfully on Newegg, I get a 20$ discount when I buy both in a combo! ![]() Intel Core i7 920 2.66 GHz LGA 1366 8MB L3 Cache Quad Core CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115202 - $299.99 ASUS P6T Deluxe LGA 1366 X58 ATX Intel Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131346 - $299.99 I'm also looking to get some *very good* ram, so I plan on getting these. Corsair Dominator 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Desktop Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145224 - $309.99 The total so far, with the 20$ discount, comes to $888.98 without shipping and tax. November 24, 2008 I've been looking for some LGA 1366 CPU heatsinks and the only one that seems decent to me is the TRUE with the LGA 1366 bolt thru kit. Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme-1366 RT CPU Heatsink: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/84..._Preorder.html - $74.95 Although 75$ is a steep price for a heatsink, (a REALLY steep price I might add ) I want to make sure my new Core i7 920 stays cool and allows me to overclock significantly better than the stock cooler.Thoughts and opinions? -------------------- Please take a look at the hardware in my sig as to take notice of what else I will need to upgrade in order to make the switch to the new core architecture. Thanks

First of all ....... In Flames \m/
Everything you selected looks good, but what about the other parts ? Would you be using the parts listed in your sig? If so ........ I might recommend getting another HDD....also stock cooling on the core i7 is a no no , so you might want to look into a Noctua mounting kit or a TRUE or something. Is all else is well , I congrats u early on ur new build!

Those are excellent parts for core i7. I think everything else in your rig is good, other than maybe another raptor for raid 0 and you should see a nice performance increase from 2Gb to 6Gb and a Quad core. Good luck with the build .

I have 2 other 250 GB hard drives for storage. I'll also try to look for a TRUE that's compatible with LGA 1366.Quote:

I would get some cheaper Gskill DDR1333 ram especially because you'll actually get less memory bandwidth with DDR1600 because it can only run in dual channel that way.

Personally I would opt for water cooling on your i7, 200$ will buy a decent loop, pump, rad and cpu block, you may end up going over 200$ slightly but your overclock may increase. Only an opinion, by the way nice setup.
