Default CPU, how important is it to overall system speed?

I'd like to get a discussion going about how big a part your cpu plays in the overall speed of your system vs a graphics card when gaming. For example I have a Q6600 OC'd to 3.2Ghz and one GTX280. Theoretically if I could buy a core i7 extreme or another GTX 280 what would lead to better framerates in games. I'm interested to see if there were any tests done while gaming on a system with say a Q6600 and two GTX280's vs a system with the new core i7 and two GTX280's. anyone?

Wel, It really depends on the games. Some rely more on the CPU and or are more CPU intensive such as GTA IV. But if it was my choice? I would go with the core I7, but that also means upgrading the motherboard (i think)

Hope this helped

Say for discussion we are talking about crysis here. would upgrading my cpu have a bigger effect than going from one gtx280 to 2?

FYI I do know that upgrading to a core i7 means i would have to buy a new mobo.

As stated above, it really depends on the game. Crysis, for example, is very GPU dependent. I also think more and more games are relying on the GPU for all of the workload. So, I think the more GPU power will yield the best results, as long as a huge CPU bottleneck isn't present.

Indeed. I used to have 1 gtx 280 and added another one to sli. It's a huge difference, more like almost double the fps.

So Itulod have you played crysis? Do you notice a big difference when using two GTX280's as opposed to one? I'm debating whether to pick up a second.

Well i tested GTA 4 on my Pc running 1680x1050 and the Same CPU at only 3.6 and used 2 diffrent cards, a 9800GTX and a GTX 260 216 core, and i would say yea the game is cpu hungry but i noticed that i would say more GPU like crysis, since i couldnt even run 1680 on the 98 and had to run on medium to get a 40 fps average, but on the 260 i was able to run 1680 and on high with a 45 fps average. so....

Does anyone know how I would see what my FPS are in crysis while I'm playing. Can you make a custom video test in that game?
