It can improve performance alittle by freeing up your system resources(memory)and CPU clock cycles used by onboard sound.

I think you have to increase the speed of the pci bus to overclock the soundcard.. right? But that just causes problems

Don;t bother, there is no point in overclocking it LOL they are meant to do what they do and are optimized like hell to do that exactly, overclocking it may actually make you LOSE performance cause then its not as optimized, see? LOL!

Exactly. Plus, there is no way to overclock the sound cards processor. You would have to make a custom bios chip, then find a way to remove the old bios chip, which is soldering directly onto the board.

That depends on the sound card. Some sound cards contain onboard processors which process the sound, like the Creative Audigy/X-FI. If you get a sound card that does not have an audio processor built into it then the CPU will still process the sound and it will not improve performance a lot.
