Default my i7 build is finished, some questions

decided it was time for an upgrade from the old pentium D..
i got the i7 920, MSI x58 pro motherboard and 6gb of wintec ampx 1600 ddr3 memory. I also ordered a new ocz stealthxtreme 600w power supply and the noctua push/pull cooler (these will not be here till thursday). i decided to throw everything into my case with the old power supply for now..
I had a couple questions so far..
after doing a clean install of vista 64..i tied to do the performance rating on my computer and it locks up when it gets to the cpu assesment. I have not been able to rate the computer yet (not that it matters)..but everything else seems to run pretty stable. is it possible that my old power supply is giving me instability problems? it is a cheap 450 watt with 2 20a 12v rails.
idle temps are at 39-43 with the stock cooler and no overclock.
i have run prime95 with 8 threads and it gets up to about 70-74, usually have folding on too. temps are checked using realtemp and everest (same reading).
another question: when i open realtemp to see the temps...the clock speed and multiplier reading at the top of the window are often lower than the stock 2.66 (is this due to some sort of power saving option?) would it be better to disable this? any other settings in the bios that I should take a look at, although this isnt overclocked at all yet? I did get the computer up to 3.9 with no problems and no voltage changes...ran prime for a few minutes...but then i decided I should go back to stock settings until i have the noctua.

i am open to any advice you guys can share with me...last time i overclocked my pc was an amd thunderbird....things have changed a little.

sorry for the short story...and as soon as i post this, im going to edit my sig so it should have all my info shortly.

thanks in advance

edit: added screenshot with everest open and prime running with realtemp open. also have the cpu realtime voltage and 12v voltage in the corner..under load the cpu changes from around 1.06 and goes up to 1.26 or around there..the 12v drops to under 12.
the bclk is set at 144..and i put the cpu voltage at auto (in bios)..seems to be stable so far at this setting and doesnt get above 80.

i will definitely be checking back with that thread to get some oc settings to start with (unless people want to chime in and offer suggestions)..
also, if anyone has any answers to the voltage and multi qs..lemme know.
thanks for the link, juggalo
used the search as well but couldnt find this info, sorry if i missed it

sorry for the double post..but im trying to get a bite
next time i should make sure to not post any of the info about my rig and do my best to sound like im 10...that always guarantees a few pages of entertainment...haha
please take this sarcasm as a joke...sometimes i feel the need to put a disclaimer before i get labeled as an ungrateful prick..

Default one last bump

so my noctua cooler and ocz powersupply are on the way...ups should be here anytime now..

i searched high and low and couldnt find info as to whether the noctua comes with any thermal pastes or not..anyone know?

is it better to buy some aftermarket AS or something..instead of use what it included (if they do include anything)

hey, i have the same board; what temps do you have on the NB (TTEMP1 sensor iirc)? mine are consistently between 85-90c idle

yep..ordered it from newegg.
waiting for the ups man.

as far as the sensor...i currently have the machine dismantled in order to install the cooler and ps.
i can let you know for sure about the temps when i have it back together

i do normally have the everest OSD up with the core temps and the highest MB sensor temp i found.. (which i think might be the nb...it was running at about 60-65 at idle but would get up to 75 or so....again, im not positive if it was ttemp1 sensor i was reading, ill find out later tonight and let you know...

i had read on the msi forums and some other places where people have had very high mb temps..not sure if i have the same problem with mine

also, what version bios are you using? 7.00? did it come with 7.00 on it? does the OC program crash on you sometimes...and the greenpower program too?
do you have any problems with the computer locking up during vista experience rating?

thanks for replying!

the only high-enough-to-worry-about temp i have is the NB (IOH) at 88-95c (doesnt vary too much with load), my cpu temps seem a little high, but i got a noctua on the way for that, and chassis temp is fine.

i was able to get a rating before with mine, and yes, the bundled progs crash for me.

my case has a 140mm fan at the front that spins 800-900rpm, and the overclocking center s/w alarms if any fan is under 1krpm. with this, if you click on DOT it brings up all the mobo info, fan info, temps, etc. but if you click any of the buttons in the toolbar at the top of this panel (silence, etc.) the whole prog crashes. ALSO, to make my situation just that much more of a pita, the s/w allows you to create custom alarm settings based on the sensors (re: my fan ) so i set the alarm to 800rpm and saved the profile. next time i start the prog its alarming again, because the s/w doesnt let you set your saved config as default, so it reverts top it's stock settings every time you start it.

sry for the paragraph lol. my bios is 7.0xxx i havent messed with the greenpower prog, but the occenter blows

yep...i have the same exact issues with the bundled programs..crash exactly when yours are crashing...sucks..
the greenpower is a cool program..download it from their website...you can make your computer pretty damn quiet and use so little power its amazing (although i dont use the gp when overclocking)

ALSO!

i just got done putting the noctua in...and my idle temps are now 29C with the stock settings (they were 50c with the stock cooler)...and my load temps running prime and editing photos with it (not that i think it makes a big difference) didnt get over 58C..

im assuming that these temps are good for stock settings..and im ready for an overclock..

also, my nm doesnt get over 75...stayed around 72 while doing the prime test.
im uploadin a screencap to show realtemp and if you look in the corner..i have the osd and the 4th thing down on it is my ioh temp.
just changed to an OCZ stealthxtreme PSU and that big fan on it might also help with the temps.

im using an old case with a 120mm fan going out the back and one that comes in the front to cool the HDD...and a pushpull with the noctua..
