Question Evga 780i + Q6600 MORE POWER!!!

Well ive been trying to overclock this thing for a while now and i just cant seem to get it stable. Anything above 3.1Ghz either BSODs on start up or after 10-15 min of Prime95. Its really starting to frustrate me . I did get it semi stable at 3.35 Ghz and ran OCCT for around 35 min(pics included) Another thing is that its running waaayy too hot. Temps at idle are 35-40 while temps under load are 70-75 which i know is way too hot. I don't leave it running there for long. I have a lapped TRUE tower and have reseated it several times and my temps with no OC were low 30's idle and under load were mid 40's. Ive disabled everything that needs to be disabled and linked/synced my Ram. Ive included some pics that i have taken that should have all the info. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Whats your vcore? How are the fans set up in your case. I should be front fans are in rear fans are out. Fan on the TRUE should also push out the back of the case.

Next q. How much TIM do you have on? To much causes issues along with the fact that the true should be lapped since their surface is rough.

As for you memory is it set to the slowest sped with the proper timings and vdimm?

I don't think it should be that hot, I see that you reseated but you maybe putting it on wrong. And you also can lap your cpu too to achieve two flat surfaces.

It is possibly a FSB Hole. it plagues the 600i and 700i chipsets (790i excluded). There are FSB ranges the NVIDIA chipset just cant run stable (due to the ability to unlink memory and the chipset strap changing at certain FSB speeds). So you can try jumping to 1510 QDR. But like others said, we need more info on the setup, like voltages, ram timings and speed, etc.

Please read for a full explanation of the FSB Hole issue:

At 390+ FSB (up to 410) I could not boot with 1.55 vcore. But when I set FSB to 411 and up, I was able to boot and run OCCT for over 3 hrs stable. I eventually reached 1.4 vcore at 3.7GHz. I have also found that no two boards will necessarily have the same FSB Hole, and bios updates can even move them to different FSB frequencies.

I would suggest lowering your multi to find your max FSB you can post at.

I discovered I had a FSB hole with my motherboard. I couldnt OC FSB from 395 - 408, but at 411 FSB I can run OCCT stable. Running 3.705GHz at 1.4v. My ambient right now is 26°C, my idle is 33/36° and load is 52/54°C.

---------------------------------------------------------------

These graphs will help explain why there is a FSB Hole:

Duckieho posted this thread on the 680i strap which I will use to help illustrate the point. Basically what these are showing is that the northbridge chipset has latency much like your ram. When you move up in FSB, it will move to a different "strap" and loosen the timmings so to speak. The graphs show the "FSB hole" as well. Basically you take a huge hit in performance between 1376MHz up to 1454MHz, and above 480 FSB. I plan on running a 400 - 450 FSB.
