Default 1st build/project need advice

hey guys need some help here in component selection.

i have never done a complete build before. I have swapped every component u can think of and have done circuit board work (electrical engineering major). Also i have minorly overclocked my pc's and friends pc's. I need help selecting the right components and some advice on how to go about getting it done.

Goal: Great rig for under/around $2000.

Purpose: I only play on the gaming end. But i do alot of CAD, Inventor, and 3Dstudio max. So a lot of my time on the computer is very very graphics heavy. Also i try to use the most of Inventor so the biggest bang for my buck processor is a must. Less noise my current pc make much much to much noise (think jet take off).

Wants:
i7 920 D0
Haf 932
2 Harddrive set up at least with proper raid array
if any (fast boot, app loading drive, and one High capacity drive)
water cooling (need advice hear have read alot but still not sure what is best)
Decent Display (22+ high rez <5ms)

Preplanned mods:
Swap all LED's for orange (front case fan, HDD, and Power)
Interior paint flat black and gloss orange
would like a drive bay reservoir to create a nice rez display with cold cathodes.
Also may window out the (x on the MoBo access panel of case make the x a window and re attach the 4 triangle pieces that are left)

As i said i know that is a lot for a first time but i have a lot of experience other places. Built robots from ground up and what not. I am just looking for good solid advice before i dive in. Thanks alot Looking forward to my project work log.

I just need good shopping lists that why i can start buying and building.
Thanks guys

You sound like you have a pretty good idea of what you want. I highly recommend looking in the for sale section here on OCN, people have some pretty good deals. Here's the link.

I don't know if you have your heart set on an Intel but I would personally go with the AMD Phenom II 955 (link). It is slightly cheaper and will give you more for your money but it is your choice. Do you have graphics cards in mind already? You could go with a Geforce GTX 285 or a little lower if you wanted to save some. The GTX 260 and up are very nice cards but other people here can give you better advice than me probably. Anyway, good luck with the build. Keep us posted

thanks shay. I have always owned intel machines so i would just as soon stay with it if i could. But still need a full shopping list.

Also there has been a change and a small delay in the build. Just got a job with Bestbuy so now i can get some of my components on the very cheap side. ie hard drives and such. That may change the shopping list a bit.

All the input you guys can provide will help me out greatly.

that all should run you about $1800 leaving you to get the hdd, optical, mouse/keyboard by yourself(possibly at a good price with your new job)

that system is:
i7 920
CM 932 haf
3x2GB G.Skill pi 1600MHz
Gigabyte UD4P mobo
sparkle gtx 285 2GB
1000W antec psu
acer 22" 5ms lcd
watercooling kit- Swiftech apogee GTZ cpu block

that should help. it would be a sick build.

Like the case selection twisted. Just finished my first build(well it will never be finished) and i have to say I love the case. It has plenty of room for adding and upgrading.
