Default Intel i7 Server

My boss asked me to put together a fast machine to evaluate a new software package. Basically he wants me to build a fast quad core processor rig, but need to stay under $2k. This server will NEVER be overclocked, but needs to be as fast as possible out of the box. This was dropped on me at the last minute, and I have several other things on my plate. Combine that with being out of the hardware game for many years and you find me asking for some help.

I was thinking of starting with the i7 950. I have zero clue as to what motherboard or memory I should choose. I am thinking that 8GB of ram will be suffcient. Probably 500GB for the hard drive, I would sacrifice space for speed, but don't have the budget for scsi (or raptors). The video should be as little as possible, just enough to run windows server 2003 (already have a licence for that). I will be ordering from newegg, I don't really have the time to shop around too much, he wants this stuff ordered today.

Thanks for the help.

Just my immediate thoughts on the hard drive - the Western Digital 640gb AAKS series drives are very quick and reasonably priced if you dont need that to be a enterprise-grade part.

Sounds like you are building a workstation then an actual server, i7 platforms are tri channel so you will likely either have 3gigs, 6 gigs or 12gigs of ram. They actually make dual i7 xeon boards now as well. But I am still not quite sure what you are doing with it, if you are just testing new software on it you definitely don't want server 2k3 as an OS. Since most of your apps are always run client size, unless you are testing things like sql server etc.

It is going to be workstation components, but the software is certainly server software (high volume OCR processing). We are just getting an idea of how the software will perform with modest hardware. If the testing proceeds to our expectations we will order a standard rack server for production use with a greater budget.

I obviously didn't know about the memory being in mulitples of three, I would assume 6GB will be sufficient.
