First...your budget. What is it?

Obviously gaming is your primary concern. What else might you do with your PC?

Quad core CPU's are not "bad" for gaming. You may have read something similar to that
based on a performance per dollar ratio. While most games will not benefit from all four cores it will never hurt performance.

Brand preferences, have any?

I do not need a monitor. Buget is anywhere from $700-$1000. Brand preferences. Nvidia, Intel and just well know trustworthy brands for the other stuff

As far as PSU goes, to find out the watts check the link in my sig and I highly recommend a Corsair. And as for the CPU, I really like my E8400. I'm trying to get it stable at 4.0GHz ATM though....

What stepping model is your 8400?

Getting 4 GHz stable on a 780i isn't the easiest. Pay attention to your SPP(North Bridge) voltage. Makes a big difference on the Nvidia boards.

If you prefer Intel it would be only logical to go with an I7 setup. Even the newer Core2 series won't give you much improvement over the Q6600 you already have.

If you are open to AMD a nice gaming PC can be built for $1000.

C0. Will do, I'll check on that voltage in the morn. I have work off tomorrow, so it's an OC day What by chance would the max voltage be on that?

I tried to keep it under 1.5v with the stock chipset cooling. If you have better cooling you may try a bit more if needed. Too much voltage on the SPP and the NF200 chip that shares the heatsink will overheat as well. Then it's all artifacts and a§§holes. Never liked the NF200 chip, don't trust the lil bastard.

If you want to go with Nvidia go with either EVGA or BFG. I have had both brands and have never had any problems with either. Also, one of the best advantages to these brands is the Step-Up program that allows you to get a card upgrade by giving you credit for the price of the card when you bought it to apply it to a new GFX card. This can be really nice since the new DX 11 cards will be coming out withing the next 6 months.
