Default First time overclocking.

Hey guys,

Today I decided to finally overclock my Q6600. It isn't extreme or anything but I guess it is a start I just have a few questions.

1. Does everything look normal here? I am really new to this and am not quite sure.

2. My temps started getting real close to 70c and because I am not exactly sure how prime95 works i stopped it just to be safe. What I am wondering is, even though prime said that "Self-test 8k passed does that mean it is finished or what exactly am i looking for?

Thank you in advance for the help.

I think you can lower the voltage a little can't you?
Otherwise, that looks like a solid OC

I don't recommend Prime95, try using OCCT, its stresses your cpu more so the you can run for an hour or 2 to see if its stable while Prime takes around 6 hours to test.

like what the person above said, lower down ur voltage just a tad bit,and also,if ur cpu goes over 70c its a danger zone, try to lower ur temps if it does go over 70c
over 70c is a danger zone but under is still safe a lil bit(well over 70c depends how much oc did u do)

i dnt noe the maximum celcus for quad cores (i think it was 80c?75c?someone correct me)

and make sure u have good air flow, cables in the way in ur computer can make air flow not so well and as a result,ur computer will get hotter, especially the cpu and gpu

If u dont mind, could u take a pic of inside ur case to see all the cables etc.?

intel spec max for the g0 stepping q6600 is 71*C:
http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SLACR

your volts look fine but if you can try and lower them, it will help lower your temps. as said above use occt to stress test, it is my personal fav and doesn't take as long as prime95. here is a link to download it:
http://www.ocbase.com/perestroika_en...erestroika-310
run a 2hr test on medium data set and you are for the most part stable if you pass. then if you pass and are looking for rock solid stable run the same test for 6+ hrs. then if you pass that you should feel pretty confident on your oc. also if you are strugaling with your oc on getting it stable you could adjust the gtlvref lanes. here is a link that will teach you all about how to adjust those:
http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=...1&key=&#476249
hope all this will help you out

Hi, since you're new to OC and we have the same CPU then follow this proceedure at the stage required:

01. Insert max of two Gigs of RAM at first
02. Delete drive sector and performed a clean install of Win Vista/XP
03. Upgrade Win Vista/XP to latest SP+
04. Disable lame Win Vista Security Alerts
05. Flash to latest Bios
06. Install latest Chipset Drivers
07. Install latest GPU Drivers
08. Install latest Sound Card Drivers (if one installed)
09. Download the latest overclocking software aids; Prime95, CPUZ, HWMonitor, GPUZ & RivaTuner
a) Prime95 has three main tests;
- Small FFTs; to test CPU stability
- In-Place Large FFTs; to test CPU and some MEM usage
- Blend; to test CPU and lots of MEM usage
b) CPUZ - Provides info on CPU overclock and CPU VCore voltage
c) HWMonitor voltage readings on many things including all
the Cores in your CPU at Idle and Load temps
d) GPUZ - Provides info on GPU(s) overclocking
e) RivaTuner - Overclocks GPUs and provided direct FAN Controls
10. Insert your additional RAM (if any)
11. Disable/Enable features in Bios (that will either help or hinder an overclock)
12. Leave MEM at 1066 MHz but losen timings to 5-5-5-18-2T (as an example depending on your RAM stock speeds) @ factory recommended volts (to take MEM stability out of equation when first overclocking the CPU)
13. Overclock the CPU to desired speeds (at slow intervals) while tweaking the voltages and testing for stability using Prime95, CPUZ and HWMonitor
14. Perform VDroop MOBO chip 2HB pencil mod to cancel CPU VCore dips when CPU is Idle and it'll increase volts by 0.02 on Load (if applicable)
15. Restore MEM to stock timings and run Prime95 Blend test for at least six hours stable
16. Overclock your GPU(s) using RivaTuner (can use software from NVIDIA, EVGA or ATI for GPU overclocking if you chose) and GPUZ
17. Set-up direct FAN control in RivaTuner with three separate profiles (60% - 80% - 100% speeds when temperatures reach 45-55C - 56-65C - 66-200C respectively)
18. Tweak Win Vista/XP to run better for a Gamer
19. Defrag Drive
20. Install games and play!

Chose your multiplier and up your default at small increments and test for stability. If unstable up your VCore/FSB volts. You may have to deal with your North/South Bridges, HT volts (depending on your MOBO, there could be different terms for these) and RAM volts as well. Always test for stability at each stage, keeping in mind to increase volts to safe levels. Make sure not to overclock your MEM until you have a stable CPU overclock. Overclock your GPU(s) last.

Look at my rig info and you'll see that an aftermarket CPU cooling fan is essential in your overclocking endevours.

The outlined steps are to give you ideas and aid you along. Note that you can Google or search this forum for specificts on each step outlined in this post for clarity.

@ tuco and computerfreak09

if either of you haven't checked through it yet you should take a peek at the 750i FTW thread:
http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...ck-thread.html
its helped me more time than i can think of with overclocking on this board.
