Well if they used sockets, ATI and Nvidia would have to make their GPU's fit into the same socket

Then there's the GPU's memory and power circuitry...

Guess you haven't noticed that GPUs have become extremely large as of late.

Theoretically, they COULD, but the thing is, enthusiast parts will be large for a long time, if not forever. The gains from smaller processes in the kinds of products that we buy are not used to make the components themselves physically smaller, but rather to cram more into the same amount of space. Have you noticed that in recent years GPU's have done anything but get smaller, despite massive reductions in the size of the actual transistors, And things like RAM and HDDs maintaining the same form-factor, just fitting more into it.

I've thought about this before (some old machines had changeable co-processors) but the key facete of this is the standardization, which no one will ever do. Jesus just look at the AGP vs PCI-E standard, took so long and is technically still going on, just for a slot shape, let alone an architectural socket (which seem to change before I even bother with the one before )

Can anyone say IGP? To OP others have said all improvements in technology for enthusiast cards are used to improve performance not reduce size. To over simplify the GPU's are basically an entire separate computing system complete with MoBo equivalent. It is specialized for mostly graphics (that is changing).

OP your thoughts are flawed for performance cards. But there is work on combining CPU and GPU in one package for power and heat savings. But these are not intended for high end.

I hope you get the whys of the flaws in your proposal. It is not feasible because of size/space and heat issues. Making a MoBo twice as big is not practical it does not offer advantage.

What was the advantage of having a socket connection vs a bus?
